When my husband and I started dating, we were in a long-distance relationship. He lived in Los Angeles and I lived in Toronto. So whenever we visited each other, we’d spend our time together exploring the other person’s city. RELATED: Romantic Weekend Getaway Ideas

My husband took me all over LA, discovering new neighborhoods and trying all the food hotspots, from fancy restaurants (The Ivy) to local favorites (Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles) to food trucks (Koji BBQ taco truck) and everything in between. And then, of course, we’d check out the sweet treats at bakeries and ice cream shops.

Living in Manhattan Beach, California, one place my husband took me was SusieCakes. At the time, they always had samples out and it was fun to go in and try a new flavor of cake and then order a cupcake to go.

It didn’t take long for SusieCakes to earn its place firmly at the top of my list of favorite bakeries and every year, my husband knows that for my birthday, it’s SusieCakes or nothing. Their vanilla celebration cake is six layers of vanilla cake, baked with colorful sugar confetti inside and topped with buttercream frosting. It’s the best cake I’ve ever had – light, fluffy and tastes so fresh and … perfectly homemade.

The kind team over at SusieCakes just sent us their Valentine’s Day Old-Fashioned Chocolate Cake and it gives the Vanilla Celebration Cake a run for its money. With a deep, rich chocolate flavor, a sweet-but-not-too-sweet chocolate frosting and super moist cake, it’s exactly what a chocolate cake should be.

If you’re looking for a great gift this Valentine’s Day, consider SusieCakes. This year, they are offering three signature flavors for Valentine’s Day: the Vanilla Celebration Cake, Old-Fashioned Chocolate and Southern Red Velvet, all with pretty designs and cute messages. (They also have a fun Super Bowl cake if you want to surprise someone special with something really unexpected.)

SusieCakes’ physical store locations can be found in California and Texas but they are now offering shipping across the country, to the continental United States.

The cake that was sent to us was shipped all the way from Texas and arrived as if I’d picked it up myself from the local bakery. The cakes are made to order and frozen to keep them fresh. They use a custom-designed food safe wrap liner to protect the cake, then shrink wrap it to further lock in freshness. The cake is then placed into a pretty inner cake box, tied with twine, and then into an insulated custom-fitted box with dry ice for shipping. It’ll show up on your doorstep as fresh and delicious as the day it was made.

If your travels take you to any of the cities that have a SusieCakes (here’s a full list of locations), then definitely stop in to see (and sample!) all their amazing cakes, cookies and cupcakes. But if there isn’t a location near you, ordering online and having something delivered right to your door is the next best thing and the perfect Valentine’s Day treat. You won’t be disappointed!
