Scott Haraguchi of Hawaii Nearshore Fishing, which offers timely fish reports, how to tips, product reviews, recipes and videos, accidentally filmed a scary encounter of him in his kayak with a tiger shark. That’s right, a tiger shark. It took place off the coast of Oahu in the great state of Hawaii. RELATED: What to Do and Eat and Where to Stay in Honolulu

Scott captioned his Instagram, “You gotta see it to believe it. Happened so fast I didn’t believe it until I saw the video I accidentally shot.”

He says it happened at noon on May 12 on the windward side of Oahu. “55ft deep, less than 2 miles from shore. Heard a “whooshing” sound, looked up and saw a wide brown thing on the side of the kayak. Thought it was a turtle at first. Happened so fast. Didn’t realize I took my left foot out of the water to brace myself from impact and actually pushed the shark’s head off with it. If you asked me to do that again, even without the shark, I don’t think I’d have that flexibility. I actually only thought the shark rammed the kayak until I saw the video at home.”

The 42-second video will definitely make your palms sweat and sadly think twice about swimming out in the open ocean.

Some of the comments from Scott’s Instagram echo my own feelings. aquasurfergirl writes, “I literally jumped out of my chair!” while stephenmichaelnelson wrote, “That was a crazy encounter!… I almost sh*t your pants for you.”

When someone asked Scott if he had fish hanging off the side of the boat on a stringer, he said no. He thinks the shark was coming back for the seal it had mortally wounded. Not sure where the seal came into play because it’s not mentioned or shown in the video. But it sounds like it could be a common sight for local fisherman based on these two comments:

benjimasa: We had that happen out there except we were on a boat! Right after caught a fish, had a monster tiger come up and circled the boat. That beast had to have been at least 15+ ft. Glad you’re all good man🤙

jahulaula’s: Standard. happens to me all the time. never let your guard down out there.

I think pawloha_petsitting’s got it right when they wrote, “THIS is why I say no to inflatable boats/stand up paddle boards/etc. 😂”

Have you ever encountered a shark attack like this before? If yes, please leave a comment.
