I live just a few miles away from the fires that are ravaging Southern California. Like most locals, I’ve been watching the coverage nonstop and I’ve noticed that one question the reporters always ask those who are evacuating is, “What did you bring?” And almost all of them say their passports and their photographs.

During the pandemic, I finally took the time to get all of my childhood photos digitized. I did some research and used this service, which made it super easy and affordable. It also gave me peace of mind, knowing that should anything happen to my precious printed pictures, I had digital copies of everything.

This morning, I was reading Kim Komando’s newsletter and she had some excellent tips and products to get, whether you live in California or not, to keep your valuables safe and easy to access in the event of a natural disaster or emergency situation. It’s wise to get these things in order before an emergency situation arises. Here are the products she recommends:

Fireproof, waterproof floor safe.
SentrySafe Fireproof and Waterproof Floor Safe

This floor safe is UL Classified to endure one hour at 1700°F and keep interior temperatures safe for irreplaceable documents, valuables, DVDs, and USBs; ETL Verified to withstand a 15-foot fall during a fire and remain closed. The safe is also ETL Verified for 24 hours of protection in water up to eight inches deep, offering peace of mind in the event of a flood.

SentrySafe Fireproof and Waterproof Chest Box with Key Lock

This safety box is portable and a more affordable option than the floor safe above. But just like a larger safe, this fire box can protect your valuables and important documents that are such a headache to replace, should they be lost, damaged or destroyed.

Fireproof Document Bag with Lock
The fireproof document bag is made of silicone coated material and aluminum foil, which can withstand  temperatures up to 5200F.

Fireproof Document Folder
A document folder is the easiest thing to grab if you need to save precious documents quickly. You can store cash, passports, legal documents and other valuables inside. Plus, this is a very inexpensive option.

Fireproof Hanger Bag
Hide valuables like cash, passports and other important documents in your closet under your clothes with this fireproof hanger bag.

We’re fortunate to live at least 12 miles away from the wildfires but the air quality is still atrocious and dangerous. We have stayed indoors, kept our windows shut and our two air purifiers are working overtime.

After we experienced the first set of out-of-control wildfires during the pandemic and we couldn’t leave the house, we invested in a solid air purifier. Right now we have two: The Dyson Purifier Cool and the Jaspr but there are others to consider that are less expensive and can help to clean the air you breathe.
