The devastating fires here in Los Angeles continue to rage on, leaving nothing in their path but destruction and despair. Fortunately, we’re at least a dozen miles from the fires but they’re still affecting us. Besides the stress of our family, friends and neighbors losing their homes, the air quality is horrendous.
Our son’s school nurse called us two days ago to let us know that he was having such difficulty breathing, she wasn’t comfortable sending him back to class. He was running laps with his friends during recess and the air really affected him. Needless to say, at home, we’re keeping the windows closed and the air purifiers on full blast.
We have two air purifiers that we run constantly in our home: The Dyson Purifier Cool and the Jaspr. Living in California, where wildfires have become an all-too-common reality, air quality can change drastically in a matter of hours. Even when the flames are miles away, the smoke, ash, and microscopic particles make their way into our living spaces. That’s why a high-quality air purifier is essential. While we like the Dyson for clearing the air to ease our son’s day-to-day allergies, when it comes to heavy duty air purification, like what’s needed during these wildfires, the Jaspr seems better up to the task.
Of course, wildfires are only one part of the equation. Everyday life comes with its own set of air quality challenges: dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, and even harmful chemicals from household products. Poor indoor air quality has been linked to health issues ranging from allergies to respiratory problems, and for families with children, seniors, or anyone with pre-existing conditions, it’s a risk worth addressing.
The first step in understanding how to tackle air quality in your home is knowing how to measure it. Devices like air quality monitors measure particulate matter (PM) levels, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other pollutants. You can also check local air quality indexes (AQI) via apps or websites to gauge outdoor conditions. When AQI levels rise, particularly above 100 (unhealthy for sensitive groups) or 150 (unhealthy for everyone), it’s time to take action indoors.
In my experience, not all air purifiers are created equal. The Jaspr stands out, thanks to its hospital-grade filtration system, specifically designed to tackle wildfire smoke and other stubborn pollutants. This isn’t your average air purifier with just a simple HEPA filter. The Jaspr combines True HEPA filtration with activated carbon and UV-C light, targeting a broader range of pollutants, from tiny particulates (as small as 0.1 microns) to odors and airborne bacteria.
It also features smart technology, adapting its performance based on real-time air quality readings. Its built-in sensors detect changes in the air and automatically adjust fan speeds to optimize filtration. You can monitor these changes through the Jaspr app, giving you a clear picture of your indoor air quality.
The Jaspr is so sensitive that it detects changes in air quality simply when we’re cooking. Burn a piece of toast and you’ll hear the fans rev right up. It really gives us peace of mind knowing the purifier is working hard when we need it most.
At a higher price point, the Jaspr air purifier might feel like a splurge, but it’s an investment in your health and well-being, especially when you consider the hidden costs of poor air quality: doctor’s visits, missed work, and the toll it takes on your long-term health.
For anyone living in wildfire-prone areas like Los Angeles or just looking to create a healthier home environment, the Jaspr is worth considering. Breathing clean air isn’t just a luxury. It’s a necessity.
