It’s no secret that I love ROAM luggage. I first discovered the brand years ago when my husband worked with the company to custom design his own piece of luggage. I loved his suitcase and the level of personalization and years later, I had the opportunity to design my own, carefully choosing the colors of every element, for a completely unique and personal piece of luggage. If you’re not familiar with the company, ROAM is a high-end luggage brand founded by former Tumi executives (Charlie Clifford, Tumi’s founder and Larry Lein, Tumi’s former executive vice president). Customers are able to fully color-customize their luggage, a first in the industry.

ROAM suitcases offer travelers a wonderful marriage between form and function. From a functionality standpoint, the hard-sided spinners are extremely lightweight, glide like a dream and have very spacious interiors. From a form standpoint, there’s a wonderful palette of colors to choose from and once customized, your bag will really stand out in a crowd – you can guarantee that no one else in the airport has a suitcase with your same one-of-a-kind design. (You can check out photos of my own custom-designed suitcase here.) Each and every ROAM suitcase is individually built-to-order in the United States, using premium materials.

ROAM has just announced a collaboration with Amanda Wachob, a world-famous multimedia tattoo artist, whose work has been showcased at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney, and The New Museum. She has personally hand-painted an Amanda Wachob x ROAM limited edition series of 100 signed pieces ($975, get $50 off your purchase using this link). The stunning color palette is inspired by the luminescent shimmer of a jewel beetle and the collection is truly a work of art.

“I had tattooed a scientist who studied the iridescence in insects,” says Wachob. “They told me that the iridescence doesn’t come from a color. It actually comes from tiny structures on an insect’s body reflecting light. And I just thought that that was so fascinating and I wanted to try to recreate that effect here.”

Each piece is personally hand-painted by Wachob in gorgeous gradating shades of blue, green, purple and gold. Customers can also customize the trim of the luggage, choosing from five different option: Venetian Green, Ibiza Sky, Como Blue, Carolina Lilac and Kyoto Black. Additionally, each piece is numbered and signed for authenticity, making it a unique work of art.

“I feel like I get so much from traveling and I really try to travel as much as I can,” Wachob says. “And I’m so used to being in airports and just seeing a sea of dusty black luggage everywhere. I had the opportunity to maybe make something that would make someone do a double take at the airport. Just try to spice things up a little bit.”

And spice things up she has indeed. The Amanda Wachob x ROAM collection is certainly one-of-a-kind and brings craftsmanship and artistry to the forefront of travel in a delightfully unexpected way.
