A viral dolphin video is making waves on social media after being picked up by major news agencies. You can see the original video below from Nick Liotta, who captioned it, “One of the most insane things I’ve ever seen while surfing.”

@nickliotta_ One of the most insane things I’ve ever seen while surfing. #surfing #dolphins #california #rincon ♬ original sound – nickliotta

The video was filmed in Rincon, a famous surf spot on the central California coast, near the Ventura/Santa Barbara county line. What’s surprising is that this video, although filmed over a year ago, is only now gaining recognition.

Nick didn’t receive many comments on his post, but here are a few:

  • @Rachel Marie: “The dolphins are at home now looking at their own version of TikTok like ‘duuuuuude’ the humans were surfing with me 😎”
  • @Christy: “This needs to go viral!! Wow!! 😳”
  • @melissa.duh: “So crazy!!”

However, major news outlets like Oakland’s KTVU FOX 2 saw over 1,200 comments on their Facebook post. Here are some of the most popular ones:

  • Nancy Harmon: “Actually, surfers joining dolphins. Dolphins own the waves…”
  • Brenda Williamson: “They’re just trying to show you who’s the better surfer. A little competition and fun 🤩”
  • Mara Roberts: “This is why California is amazing!!!”
  • Dan Gribi: “I was surfing in Northern San Diego County one time with some dolphins, and they were great! But the coolest thing was when I was paddling back out against the incoming whitewater, the dolphins would just jump right over it! They were definitely getting more waves than I was.”
Johnny Jet surfing in Noosa, Australia

I live in Los Angeles and, while I’m not an avid surfer, I’ve tried multiple times here, as well as in Hawaii and Australia. My favorite spot is Waikiki because the water is clear, shallow, and warm. It’s the opposite in L.A. …  I’m not into dark, cold, and deep water.

One time, I was paddling out at Redondo Beach (in L.A. County, not far from LAX), and when a wave came, I did a duck dive. Just as I was diving under, I saw a dolphin riding the wave. My heart stopped because I thought it was a shark, and of course, I quickly hightailed it out. I’ll stick to Waikiki.
