Last month, I wrote a post about a JetBlue passenger who was sitting in the exit row and was kicked off the plane for not paying attention to the flight attendant when she did her safety check. As I wrote in that post, you can’t treat the exit row like any other row because as an exit row passenger, you have a major responsibility. You need to know what’s going on and you need to be able to assist in the event of an emergency. You definitely can’t sit in the exit row, put earplugs in and go to sleep before the flight attendant has performed the safety checks like the passenger in this story did.
One of a flight attendant’s main checks is to ensure that passengers in the exit row are willing and able to help in the event of an emergency. On multiple occasions, I’ve seen passengers get reseated because they either didn’t speak English, weren’t physically able, were too young (you need to be 15+) or couldn’t hear, which happened to my father, who was hard of hearing.
That’s one reason why I usually sit near the exit row if I can’t get a better seat because if the crew needs to reseat someone, it’s usually a passenger in close proximity who will score that exit row seat.
Travel blogger Tia captured incredible video of a passenger making a number of grave mistakes on a recent Frontier Airlines flight from Charlotte to Texas (the exact destination isn’t clear).
Tia captioned her video: “When keeping it real goes wrong. Irate lady refused to deplane, because of her non compliance and disrespect towards the flight attendant. We all had to deplane and she was then arrested.”
Tia’s video (embedded below) is over five minutes long and it’s painful to watch but the lady in the exit row aisle must have made a bad joke to the flight attendant during her safety check and then gave attitude to the flight attendant and gate agent, then called two Caucasian workers ‘Betty White’.

According to the Independent, Tia said about the incident: “This lady right here, when she first got on the plane and acknowledged the exit row, she said, ‘Oh, I’m not going to save anybody. If something happens, I’m going to save myself,’” Tia explained. “That was her attitude throughout the seating process. And I already knew something was about to pop off when she had that attitude.”
As a number of commenters already pointed out (see below), unfortunately, it’s just never wise to joke around about serious things in an airport or on an airplane. I’m sure the woman was just making a joke but when a flight attendant asks you if you are willing and able to help in the event of an emergency, it’s a serious question and a serious answer is expected. Unfortunately, the woman in the video sealed her fate by giving the flight attendants attitude afterwards. That’s a hard one to come back from because flight crew will not stand for it and need to know you’re not going to pose any problems in the air.
If a flight attendant, gate agent of captain asks you to get off the plane, the best thing you can do is grab your things and get off, otherwise you will be arrested, which is what happened to this woman.
One thing some pilots will do is if someone refuses to get off the plane, they will have all other passengers deplane so it’s just that one passenger left for authorities to deal with.
Here are some of the comments on the video:
Gorjess1019: Sounds like she made a joke about not helping out in the case of an emergency and it backfired ???♀️
Foodepisodes: One thing I’ve learned is NEVER have any type of disrespect or disagreement with any flight attendants ?
krissyloll3: Once you’ve been asked to leave the plane-it’s a wrap Just leave
Lunamarlena: once you had the Captain get out of the cockpit and ask you to go, you better go. He has the ultimate say on what happens in the airplane.
My advice to anyone flying is don’t mess with the flight crew. While it might seem like they’re just there to greet you as you get on the aircraft and to pass out food and drinks, remember that they’re just passing time. A flight attendant’s first and foremost responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of passengers and they have the power to get you arrested, banned from an airline and even put on a no-fly list. In my experience, most captains will back their flight attendants so once you’ve gotten on the wrong side of the flight attendant, you’re pretty much done. It’s not worth it.
