AccuWeather shared a disturbing video (embedded below) on Threads with the caption: “Dramatic video captured a woman nearly being swept away by powerful king tides in Oregon. The man who took the video was on a sandbar about 15 feet up. The woman was reportedly helped by people onshore afterward. Officials remind people to watch king tides from a safe distance.”

According to the California Coastal Commission, “while the term “King Tide” isn’t a scientific term, it is used to describe very high tides, caused when there is alignment of the gravitational pull between sun, moon, and Earth. When King Tides occur during floods or storms, water levels can rise higher and have the potential to cause great damage to the coastline and coastal property.”
As you can see in the video, the woman was very lucky to escape alive and social media had a variety of comments as you might expect, some asking what was she thinking and why didn’t the man filming help her?
@Susancuylav: I have no sympathy for people who ignore obvious dangers. I can’t. Am I cold hearted? No, just fed up with stupidity.
@mimifrah_ : Why is she walking there?! What is wrong with people, the ocean is wild.
@em.dontlookatme.gar: Not a single survival Instinct in sight
@myeyephonepix: My Dad had two solid pieces of advice to his children when we went to the beach;
1) don’t turn your back on the ocean. Well, not until you get of the soft sansand and headed home
2) The ocean is beautiful, but the ocean is not your friend. It does not care about you one bit. Harsh? Nope. I told my kids the same thing.
@deb_dickerson: To the folks saying that the guy filming should have run down and tried to help. I live in Oregon and go to the coast a lot. It’s really easy to get caught in a sneaker wave. And if you don’t know what you’re doing don’t try to help someone else because chances are both of you will get swept away. Please please pay attention. Never stand or walk with your back to the ocean. Especially here. It’s treacherous. She was really lucky!
Accuweather shares the tips below for observing king tides, which can be up to one to two feet higher than average tides:
Stay Back: Always observe the tides from a safe distance, preferably from an elevated position or behind barriers.
Never Turn Your Back on the Ocean: Sneaker waves can appear without warning, so remain vigilant at all times.
Know the Tides: Check tide schedules to know when the highest tides will occur.
Wear Appropriate Gear: If you plan to be near the water, wear suitable clothing and footwear.
Keep Children and Pets Close: Ensure that children and pets are kept well away from the water’s edge.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Be mindful of the terrain and potential escape routes in case of an unexpected wave.
Call 911 in Emergencies: If someone gets into trouble, call 911 rather than attempting a rescue yourself. The ocean’s power can easily turn rescuers into victims.
My instinct would have been to jump in and save her but I think I would have regretted that since there’s a good chance I would have been washed away and I have two little ones to raise. I most certainly would have alerted her before the wave came to get her tail out of there because what she was doing was reckless. What would have you done in this situation?
