Cruise ships are all about fun in the sun, endless buffets and exotic ports of call. But these floating resorts also have their fair share of germs, with thousands of passengers sharing close quarters, meaning they can become hotbeds for illnesses. The good news? You can enjoy your cruise without spending half of it in your cabin feeling miserable. With a little planning and smart habits, staying healthy on your cruise is possible. Here’s how:
How common is it to get sick on a cruise?
Despite the best efforts of cruise lines to maintain cleanliness, the close quarters on large ships mean that illnesses can spread quickly. According to the CDC, gastrointestinal illnesses, particularly Norovirus, are the most commonly reported sicknesses on cruise ships. Norovirus can cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and body aches… not the way you want to spend your vacation.
Respiratory illnesses, including colds, flu, and COVID-19 are also a concern due to the shared air in public areas. While you might be focused on relaxing and sunbathing, it’s important to take a few simple precautions to ensure you stay healthy and make the most of your trip.
Expert tips for staying healthy on a cruise
We spoke to Dr. Nina Shapiro, a pediatric ENT at Westside Head and Neck in Los Angeles, and author of HYPE and The Ultimate Kids’ Guide to Being Super Healthy, who shared essential advice for staying healthy while cruising this summer.
1. Stay up-to-date on immunizations
“Especially if you are traveling outside of the US, make sure you are up to date on any immunizations you might need,” says Dr. Shapiro. “There are many travel clinics that can help ensure you’re in good shape before setting sail.” Certain regions may require vaccinations for diseases that are rare or newly emerging in the U.S., such as measles. Dr. Shapiro also recommends checking with your doctor about updated COVID-19 vaccines, especially if you’re visiting areas with new outbreaks.
2. Be prepared with medications
Dr. Shapiro advises bringing some basic medications with you when traveling. “This might include antibiotics, antivirals, and antifungals, just to be prepared.” Having these on hand can be a lifesaver in case you start to feel unwell and can help you address any health issues quickly.
3. Avoid Norovirus: Wash your hands and be careful at the buffet
Norovirus, often referred to as ‘the cruise ship virus,’ is a highly contagious stomach bug. “It’s truly a nasty illness, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches, and fever for up to five days or more,” warns Dr. Shapiro. “Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Hand sanitizer doesn’t protect you from Norovirus.”
When eating at buffets, “well-cooked foods or individual servings are the safest way to go,” Dr. Shapiro advises. It’s best to avoid touching your face while eating and always use utensils instead of your hands to serve yourself.
4. Don’t sail sick
Dr. Shapiro makes it clear: if you’re feeling unwell before your trip, don’t risk it. “While you may have been planning this trip for months, it’s not worth ruining your vacation and potentially making your fellow passengers sick.” Consider purchasing travel insurance for all aspects of the trip, including flights, cruising, and shore experiences.

Wash your hands frequently
As Dr. Shapiro points out, it’s important to always wash your hands with soap and water, especially before eating and after touching public spaces. This is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce your risk of illness. Don’t forget to pack a small hand lotion to keep your hands from drying out due to frequent washing.
Use hand sanitizer when necessary
While handwashing is essential, using hand sanitizer is a good backup, especially when you’re on the go. Most cruise ships have hand sanitizer stations throughout the ship. You can carry a small bottle of your favorite sanitizer (look for one that doesn’t dry out your skin) to keep your hands germ-free between washes.
Hydrate regularly
Between the salty sea air and tropical drinks, dehydration is a real concern. Drink plenty of water to keep your immune system functioning at its best.
Be cautious at the buffet
Buffets are prime spots for germs to spread. Always use tongs or utensils to serve yourself, and avoid touching your face while eating. This is a simple habit that can help minimize your exposure to germs.
Wipe down high-touch surfaces
Your cabin’s door handles, light switches, and TV remote can be germ hotspots. Pack disinfectant wipes and clean these surfaces when you arrive, as a precaution.
Avoid shared drink containers
Shared containers like punch bowls or water pitchers may seem inviting but can harbor germs. Stick to single-serve drinks to keep things sanitary.
Get plenty of sleep
Late nights and early excursions can take a toll on your immune system. Prioritize sleep to give your body the rest it needs to stay healthy and energized throughout the trip.
Be cautious in hot tubs
Hot tubs can harbor bacteria, especially if the water looks cloudy. If you’re unsure about the cleanliness of the hot tub, it’s better to skip it. Always shower before and after using the tub to minimize the risk of infection.
Choose excursions that provide fresh air
Some excursions, like guided open-air tours or snorkeling, offer more space and fresh air compared to crowded indoor activities. These options can reduce your exposure to germs and help you enjoy your day out on the island.
Bring a first aid kit
Don’t rely solely on the ship’s medical facilities. Pack a basic first aid kit that includes pain relievers, motion sickness remedies, and any necessary prescription medications. Or purchase a ready-made first aid kit that will have all the essentials.
Boost your immune system before boarding
In the weeks leading up to your cruise, focus on staying healthy by eating well, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. A strong immune system will help you fight off any germs you may encounter.
Stay active
Cruise ships often have gyms, dance classes, and plenty of opportunities to be active. Take advantage of these to keep your body moving and maintain your energy levels throughout the trip.
Know the symptoms of illness
If you start feeling unwell, don’t hesitate to seek help from the ship’s medical staff. Early treatment can help prevent your symptoms from worsening and reduce the chance of spreading illness to others.

If the crew asks you to stay in your cabin due to illness, follow their instructions. Isolating yourself helps protect both your health and the well-being of fellow passengers.
