If you love to hike, it’s important to take numerous precautions to ensure your safety, especially if you hike when you travel and are unfamiliar with the trail. Here are some hiking safety tips:

1. Research the hike before you go to get a sense of potential dangers, holes or cliffs.

2. Stretch before you begin your hike to loosen your muscles and limber up.

3. Walk slowly, pay attention and stay aware of your surroundings at all time. Look out for obstructions on your path, branches, tree roots and even wild animals.

4. Wear appropriate footwear. It’s important to wear properly fitting hiking boots with adequate support and traction.

5. Hold on to handrails if there are any and take short, steady steps.

6. Use trekking poles to give you added stability and security while you are walking. They will help to keep your body upright and minimize the impact on your knees.

7. Make sure you have plenty of water to stay hydrated and a fully charged phone in case you need to make an emergency phone call. It’s wise to also keep a portable phone charger on you as well in case your phone runs out of battery.

Never stand closer to the edge than your height. If you trip and fall at least you won’t fall in.
