The American Airlines regional jet operated by PSA Airlines crash on Wednesday night was devastating and my heart goes out to everyone impacted, especially friends, family and loved ones of the victims. I just saw a local news segment on KTLA about the lives lost, and it brought me to tears—it was truly heartbreaking. My heart broke when the father of the PSA pilot who passed away shared that he’s “so heartbroken he can’t even cry himself to sleep.” I can’t even begin to imagine what these families are enduring.
From what I’ve seen on social media, it seems like nearly every traveler, including pilots and flight attendants, is deeply affected by this tragedy. After all, this is the first fatal commercial plane crash in the U.S. in nearly 16 years. I just wrote these tips for travelers who may be, understandably. experiencing a fear of flying.
There’s a video going viral (embedded below) of an American Airlines captain giving his passengers a heartfelt announcement before takeoff from Jacksonville, Florida to Miami, Florida.
@leighterhaters Life is short, hug your people ❤️ whoever is the pilot on AA1044 to MIA, i love you #unitedbywings #americanairlines #blackhawk #crash75 #planecrash #aviation #flightcrew #flightattendant ♬ original sound – Leighton Mixon
I think every air traveler can agree they would like to have this captain piloting their plane. Here are some of the comments left on the video:
Ayy: He wants to go home to see his family just as much as you do.
Vivian: “I have no higher calling” 🥰 💖🙏
Katie DeRouen: That is so kind of him knowing his heart is probably heavier than it’s ever been 💔
Dee: This is a hard day for all pilots and flight attendants too 🥺
Whitneyfessel: This was so sweet and reassuring
Champagnemami: It’s like he felt the fear.. i’m glad he spoke up about it. ✨
I’m sure other airline captains have made similar announcements and if they have witnessed one, please let me know so I can share them as well. And if you have a fear of flying, I can relate. Here’s my story about being afraid to fly and how I overcame it.
