The internet, smart phones and social media have really changed the world. For some, it’s a blessing and for others, not so much. I think the airlines would say they fall under the ‘not so much’ category as incidents that would never have received the attention they deserve, now end up being front page news around the world.

The latest incident that airline executives are forced to address comes to us courtesy of  Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). On Wednesday, a Norwegian passenger posted on his Facebook account that he was sitting next to a lady in SAS Plus (extra legroom and service) from Oslo to Malaga, Spain. When the lady opened up her tray of food that had just been served (part of SAS Plus), a mouse jumped out and scurried away.

Here’s Jarle Børrestad’s post translated to English: “Let’s go to Malaga😎 Believe it or not. A lady next to me here at SAS Plus opened the food and jumped out a mouse. Now we have turned around and landed at CPH for flight changes 🤣🤣🤣✈️✈️✈️✍️✍️ ✍️”

An airline can’t have a mouse or any other rodent aboard the aircraft because it poses a flight risk since they’re known to chew on wires, so the plane had to divert to Copenhagen.

As reported in by the BBC, airline spokesperson Oystein Schmidt confirmed the incident and told Agence France Presse news agency, “this is something that happens extremely rarely,” and they “have established procedures for such situations, which also include a review with our suppliers to ensure this does not happen again.”

I’m sure flight attendants are going to be told to remove the foil wrap from food to make sure there aren’t any other rodents because they don’t want to add a mouse to the list of perks that come with SAS Plus, which include the following:

Choose SAS Plus to enjoy more comfort and service. On flights within Scandinavia, Finland and Europe the seat comfort is the same as in SAS Go, but to and from Asia and North America you get a wider seat and extra legroom.

For flights within Europe and Scandinavia, SAS Plus perks are:
-Coffee and tea
-Meal/snack
-WiFi for a fee (available on most flights)
-Fast Track
-SAS Lounge
-Priority boarding
-Pre-book a seat for a fee
A live mouse

Fortunately, passengers on the flight were later flown to Spain on a different aircraft. However, I’m betting passengers wished they’d just continued to Malaga after it took so long to land in Copenhagen; they had to circle (see FlightRadar24 screenshot above). But because they went to CPH, another SAS hub, they were able to replace the aircraft and have their mechanics check the wiring. No word on how or where they found the mouse.

Below is a video posted on YouTube about the incident. A mouse in the passenger cabin resulted in an SAS flight bound for Malaga from Oslo to divert to Copenhagen on 18 September.
