My father passed away two years ago at the age of 94. He stopped driving when he was in his mid-eighties because he couldn’t hear very well, and worse, his eyesight was deteriorating. He split his time between Florida and Connecticut while I lived across the country in Los Angeles, and for years, I relied on Uber and Lyft to help him get from point A to point B safely. I tried getting him his own account, but he just couldn’t figure it out, and honestly, it was frustrating for me at times, especially when the app said the driver was just two minutes away but ended up taking 10 minutes or, worse, canceled.

Sometimes I would get a gem like the gentleman pictured above who escorted him into his house. However, I always wished there was a simpler, more senior-friendly solution, since trying to arrange one for someone thousands of miles away isn’t easy. That’s why I’m excited about a new offering from Lyft: Lyft Silver.

Launching with early access that started on May 5, Lyft Silver is more than just a new ride option. It’s a service specifically for older adults who want to stay mobile, independent and connected without the stress of navigating technology or relying on others.

Here’s what makes Lyft Silver special:
Live, Human Support: Riders can quickly connect with a real person for help, making it easier for those who may not be comfortable with apps.
Streamlined Simplicity: The app interface is simplified to focus only on what’s essential.
Comfortable Rides: Lyft prioritizes vehicles that are easier to get in and out of.
Peace of Mind: Ride details can be shared with family or caregivers so everyone knows a loved one has arrived safely.

Whether it’s to a doctor’s appointment, meeting friends for lunch or just enjoying a bit of independence again, Lyft Silver helps make those everyday outings smoother and safer.

If you have an aging parent, grandparent or friend who could benefit from this, now’s the time to sign up or send them an invite. You can even help fund their rides using Lyft Cash.

For me, this is personal. I know firsthand how meaningful it is when you can give someone you love the freedom to keep living life on their terms, even when you’re miles away.
