Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been fascinated by airplanes. To this day, they still blow my mind. It is so incredible that we are able to get on these huge metal birds and fly all around the world and do it so comfortably and, most importantly, safely. Most of my friends think I’m like Rain Man when we’re playing beach volleyball and I see a widebody takeoff from nearby LAX. I can tell them the type of aircraft, the airline and where it’s going. Many don’t actually believe me, which is why I then whip out this app that shows where planes are going so they can see for themselves.

If you’re an aviation geek (avgeek) like me, then you most likely know that one of the most popular places in the world to marvel at planes taking off and landing is Maho Beach in Sint Maarten. See the video below:

Well, I recently learned of a new airport that might have Maho Beach beat. Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport (JSI) on the island of Skiathos in Greece is front and center in this avgeek video.

Twitter user @ErinGC2002 tweeted: “Wizz A321 with a very low landing in Skiathos! ✈️ #skiathos #planespotting #Airbus.”

And they weren’t kidding. Is this video not insane? According to Wikipedia, the JSI runway is 5,341-feet long (1,628 meters) so it’s able to accommodate aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 767-200. However, “the runway is characterised as ‘short and narrow’.”

That explains why the pilots made such a low landing as they would need to make sure they have plenty of runway to slowly hit the brakes for a smooth arrival.

Since I have no plans to fly to the Caribbean or Greece anytime soon, I’ll just settle for the plane spotting a few miles down the road from me at the In-N-Out at LAX (pictured above). It’s nowhere near as insane as the others but still, extremely cool. It’s also why Crankyflier and NYC Aviation hold their annual Dorkfest at the park across from that In-N-Out and hundreds of people fly in to meet up and … watch airplanes.
