I’m not quite sure what’s going on with some men and their bladders but this is the third time I’ve written about an Indian national urinating on their seatmate. Both previous incidents occurred on American Airlines flights from JFK to Delhi, with passengers sitting in business class. Unsurprisingly, alcohol was blamed for both cases, and it seems to be the culprit again in this latest situation.

Air India aircraft.According to Hindustan Times, “A passenger of an Air India flight has been put on a no-fly list for a month for allegedly urinating on a co-passenger while the aircraft was in the air on Wednesday, April 9, an incident the airliner also confirmed. The man who was urinated upon in the Air India Delhi-Bangkok flight AI2336 has been identified as Hiroshi Yashizane, the managing director of Bridgestone India. The accused, Tushar Masand, was sitting in seat 2D on the flight.”

Masand has been temporarily placed on Air India’s no-fly list, but the final decision will be made once the airline’s independent committee completes its investigation. It’s unclear exactly what happened but sources familiar with the incident said the passenger immediately apologized for his behavior.

I would hope so. This may have been an accident, but it’s not clear. I remember being on an American Airlines flight from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX), sitting in the last row of first class. I got up to use the restroom and noticed a middle-aged man peeing into a plastic garbage bag that a flight attendant had provided. He was near the emergency exit, being discreet, and only the flight attendant and I noticed. It seemed he had some sort of health issue and since the bathroom was occupied, he couldn’t hold it.

It was unfortunate, but there was no malicious intent. Incidents like this, along with one we had when our son was 1 year old and threw up on my wife at the start of a flight, are why we now always travel with a backpack that includes a change of clothes for everyone. You never know if you’re going to get a drink spilled on you, someone will throw up, or, yes, even have an unfortunate urination incident.
