I recently came across a video showing an airport baggage handler writing “Safe Flight” in the snow outside the window of a Delta airplane (video embedded below). While the exact location remains unclear, the presence of a Delta regional jet suggests it was somewhere in the Northeast, Midwest or Canada. The video quickly went viral, but not everyone shared my appreciation for this gesture.

If I were the passenger who filmed this, I would have been both flattered by the gesture and impressed by the handler’s ability to write in the snow.

Several viewers shared similar sentiments:

  • @mylook.onworld: “Coolest thing I’ve ever seen today 😍”
  • @breadstickscove: “He writes better in the snow than I do on paper!!”
  • @Cathymfinley: “That was really kind of him to do that. A confidence boost after all the airplane disasters lately!🤩”
  • @stassi_baddie: “God bless his heart🙏🏽❤️”

Others made lighthearted comments:

  • @farflungdreamer: “Safe Flig everyone 💖🌻”
  • @zc.0973: “With all these plane crashes happening recently, no one’s safe 😂”

However, some viewers were more cautious, interpreting the gesture as a potential warning:

  • @iamcorrine2: “I think although nice, this would send me into a tailspin thinking ‘Is this a message to get off the plane?’ ‘Why would he write that?’ ‘Did he do something to the plane?’ And then my rational side would say, ‘No, he’s just a nice guy. He just wanted to make us feel comfortable.'”
  • @likhithx: “That would give me anxiety lol”
  • @prince_z099: “Eh, I’m not too sure about this one… my mind would immediately go into ESCAPE mode. Grab my things, PLEASE!! 😂”

The recent uptick in airplane crashes has undoubtedly heightened many people’s anxieties about flying. In fact, several of my friends, family members and readers have asked whether it’s safe to fly. The answer is yes—flying is safe. The baggage handler’s gesture should be seen as a kind-hearted message, not a cryptic warning.

If you’re struggling with flying anxiety, I can relate. I used to be afraid to fly myself, which is why I wrote this post on coping with a fear of flying after the recent crashes. And here’s a personal story about developing and overcoming my own fear of flying.
