Business Gold Benefits: Additional Rewards Categories

You can now earn 4x Membership Rewards® points on the two categories where your business spends the most each billing cycle from six eligible categories. While your top two categories may change, you will earn 4x points on the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these categories each calendar year (then 1x thereafter). Only the top two categories in each billing cycle will count towards the $150,000 cap.

Here are the six eligible categories:

  • U.S. purchases at electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers (New!)
  • Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S. (New!)
  • Transit purchases including trains, taxicabs, rideshares, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
  • Purchases at U.S. media providers for advertising in select media (online, TV, and radio)
  • U.S. purchases at gas stations
  • U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery

Additionally, American Express Travel® purchases through amextravel.com will now earn 3x points per $1.

All remaining purchases earn 1x point per $1.

“The refreshed Business Gold Card helps our Card Members spend more time on what’s important, running their business,” says Anna Marrs, Group President of Global Commercial Services and Credit & Fraud Risk at American Express. “Whether they’re making purchases for business needs like advertising, wireless bills, technology expenses, or on office supplies, to booking travel and dining with clients, the refreshed Business Gold Card will help small businesses unlock value.”

Your points are most valuable when redeemed for award flights. Additionally, you will receive 25% of your points back (up to 250,000 bonus points per calendar year) on qualifying first-class and business-class award flights.

Business Statement Credits

These qualifying expenses are eligible for card statement credits when using the Business Gold Card:

  • $240 flexible statement credit: Up to $20 in statement credits each month for eligible purchases at FedEx, Grubhub, and office supply stores. Enrollment required.
  • Walmart+ membership credit: Receive a statement credit that covers the full cost each month, valued at $155 annually (subject to auto-renewal).

In addition to these Business Gold benefits, you can continue receiving up to $100 in experience credits to spend on qualifying dining, spa, and resort activities when you book hotel stays through The Hotel Collection from American Express and stay at least two consecutive nights. Note that the credit varies by property.

Cell Phone Protection

In addition to earning up to 4x Membership Rewards per $1 on cell phone bills, your qualified devices can be eligible for up to $800 per claim in cell phone protection.

You may be reimbursed the lesser of your repair or replacement costs following damage or theft for a maximum of $800 per claim when the cell phone line is listed on a wireless bill and the prior month’s wireless bill was paid with an eligible card account.

However, each claim carries a $50 deductible. Additionally, there is a limit of two approved claims per 12-month period. Additional terms and conditions apply.

Annual Fee Increase

Now, there is one bit of bad news for long-time Business Gold members. The annual fee increased to $375 on February 1, 2024 (See Rates & Fees), and there is a $0 foreign transaction fee (See Rates & Fees).

Additional employee cards continue to be free. You can add up to 99 to your account.

These new benefits will make it easier to earn bonus points from your business spending and save money in the process. Getting the Rose Gold design on a metal credit card is also nifty.
