AirAsia passengers were treated to a serious upgrade to the airline’s in-flight entertainment on a recent flight from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore thanks to David Foster, his wife Katharine McPhee and a handful of other music legends who were on the flight and decided to treat the passengers to a mini-concert. Foster, a 16-time Grammy-award winning musician, composer, arranger, record producer and music executive, has been performing his HITMAN: David Foster & Friends tour in Asia since August 5th in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Jakarta. Instead of flying private, as you might expect, he and his friends are not only flying commercial, they’re flying a low-fare carrier.

If you’ve ever flown AirAsia before, then you know it’s the region’s first low-cost airline and was started in Malaysia by billionaire Tony Fernandes. I was fortunate to hang out with him one night in L.A. and he later did my Travel Style Q&A.

I’ve also flown his airline a couple of times between Bangkok, Thailand and Siem Reap, Cambodia. I wrote in my trip report, “It’s worth it to pay extra for Air Asia’s Premium Seats (previously known as Hot Seats) since you get a few extra inches of legroom and you get to board first. And you don’t have to have advertising on the seatback in front of you, in your face. Extra legroom can be found in rows 1 and 14 on the A319 aircraft and rows 1, 12 and 14 on A320 aircraft. Therefore, not all premium seats are created equal. The first five rows and the exit row are designated with red leather seat top covers, which really stand out against the regular black leather seats.”

These are the seats the stars, which included Michael Bolton, Peabo Bryson, Andrea Hosking, and Loren Allred, were sitting in. Also on the flight was Malaysian icon Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza.

The video, embedded below, was posted to Instagram on August 9 by Victor Wong, an AirAsia flight attendant and according to the Straits Times, “passengers were seen awestruck as they were treated to beautiful renditions of classic hits like A Whole New World, I Have Nothing, When A Man Loves A Woman, I Swear, and Never Enough.”

Victor captioned his post with, “Had the pleasure to lead my amazing colleagues to welcome @ctdk @davidfoster @katharinefoster @michaelbolton @lorenallred @peabobryson2 on David Foster and Friends Asia Tour.”

Unfortunately, shortly after this video was taken, the Fosters experienced a family tragedy. Katharine McPhee posted on Instagram, “Dearest Jakarta fans, it’s with heavy heart I announce I have to miss our final two shows of our Asia run. David and I have had a horrible tragedy in our family and at least one of us need to get back home to our family. ‘Please know how sorry I am and how much I wish to return one day and perform for you all. Love Katharine.”

According to ET, “the nanny of Katharine McPhee and David Foster’s 2-year-old son, Rennie Foster, has died.” David stayed on with the rest of the stars to perform the final two shows, which took place in Jakarta, Indonesia.
