ARTICLE OVERVIEW:
- Know baggage rules on low-cost airlines to avoid surprise fees for minor infractions.
- Watch for gate agent incentives, as some earn bonuses for charging extra fees.
- Invest in a duffel bag that meets airline requirements, like this one that fits under the seat to skip baggage charges.
I recently wrote this story: Airline charges passenger $62 for water bottle on flight: ‘I couldn’t board without paying’. To summarize that story, Ryanair charged a passenger $62 for a water bottle on her return flight from London to Dublin. Ruby Flanagan, a UK reporter, had placed her water bottle on her backpack’s top handle, as she did on the outbound flight. However, at the gate, agents claimed the bottle made the backpack exceed size limits and considered it a “second bag,” resulting in a fee. Ruby found this unfair, noting other passengers with similar bags weren’t charged. She eventually paid the fee to board. This highlights the importance of understanding baggage policies on low-cost airlines to avoid unexpected charges.
Ruby made a huge mistake by not just ditching her water bottle since it cost half of what Ryanair was charging for going over the baggage limit. However, you can understand her frustration and your blood will definitely boil after seeing the embedded video below of another European low-fare carrier, EasyJet, trying to charge for a passenger’s bag not fitting in the bag sizer when clearly it does.

I mean come on, this employee is either getting a kickback or just enjoys messing with people. I think it’s the former, which is the case with some U.S. airlines too. I wrote a story in 2023 of a Frontier Airlines passenger having a similar run-in with an agent. Just like in the above video, her bag fit in the sizer too. She later revealed that the gate agents get a $10 bonus for every bag they force passengers to pay the $100 extra baggage fee.
My advice is to avoid these low-fare carriers unless you know their rules backwards and forwards. You may also want to get this duffle bag, which is 17 x 12.6 x 6.3 inches, meaning that it fits into an 18 x 14 x 8 inch bag sizer and can be stowed under your seat so you don’t have to pay those outrageous fees.

Johnny, will this duffle bag satisfy the carry-on requirements for ALL airlines, or just the ones listed in this article? Thanks!
This will definitely fit in all US airlines and the majority of International airlines. Just Google the airline and “carry on size”
