A Delta Air Lines passenger posted a video of her at the gate in tears because she has food allergies and the flight attendant or gate agent kicked her off the plane. The video and transcript are below:

In the video, she says: “I was supposed to be on my way home so I can see my doctor tomorrow in the morning. Because I’m having really serious health issues right now. And when I flew out to Tulsa from Boston on Thursday, I did all the things to accommodate, like advocate for myself so I can have a safe flight. It was a mild anaphylactic shock reaction compared to the ones I’ve had, but it’s really important. I felt really embarrassed and I just was trying to make sure that didn’t happen today, and somehow I just got kicked off the plane for having an allergy. I love Delta. I’ve flown Delta my whole life. I have the Delta card, and I was just trying to explain the situation to someone, and it’s like they cut me off. I said, “Do you mind? Can I please finish what I’m saying?” They told me to go ahead finish what you’re saying. I felt like I didn’t want to be this person. I don’t want to be crying. I just want to be on the flight home so I can see my doctor and figure out why this is happening. I don’t get how I’m so sick. I have food allergies, as stupid as they sound, or a disability that’s covered by the American Disability Act. So, actually what do I do? I upgraded my seat to try to be safer. I’ve done everything I think of. I have all the various versions of credit cards that I  are associated with Delta. I have a specific Delta credit card. I just feel like if I’m the a*hole, this is my fault. What should I have not said? I have an allergy and my bag is on the plane. I have a checked bag on the plane. I’m really, really embarrassed, really disappointed, and literally just sitting here crying at the gate now, not knowing what to do.”

A Delta Air Lines passenger says she was kicked off a flight because of her food allergies.
I have a few questions but first of all, I really feel for her and everyone else who has food allergies. Having food allergies is terrifying and flying with them compounds the problem significantly because if you have an anaphylactic reaction in the air, you can’t get rushed to the hospital.

My son has food allergies so I can totally relate to her situation and a few years ago, wrote a post about flying Southwest Airlines with a food allergy.

Fortunately, my son’s allergy isn’t airborne meaning that if someone opens a pack of nuts nearby he won’t go into anaphylactic shock. I’ve been on flights before where there are passengers like this and the flight attendants make an announcement asking everyone to please not open anything with peanutsbecause a passenger on the plane could die.

It’s quite shocking how oblivious and selfish some passengers are. On one occasion, a few seconds after the flight attendant made such an announcement, the person across the aisle from me literally opened his Snickers and ate it. I yelled at him and he said, “but it’s my Snickers bar and I’m hungry.”

I have questions about this particular incident. I’m not sure what happened between her and the flight attendant or the gate agent that made them kick her off the flight. And what the Delta credit card have to do with it?

What I did learn from the comments is that if you do have a serious food allergy, you should tell the airline in advance so they can accommodate you as best they can. It sounds to me like she did and the Delta employee didn’t want to take the risk of something to happen to her but it seems like they’re doing more harm than good.

Here are some notable comments:

@flyingbean86: If you had a reaction on the way out they probably want a doctor to clear you. Or if you disclosed that then you need to be cleared to fly, they won’t

@user4733619504973: I always fly with Delta. I have a peanut and tree nut allergy. I let them know when I book, I preboard and talk to the flight attendants. They have always been great.

@LawAndOrderingAllTheFood: I have airborne nut allergies (peanuts and almonds). With Delta I am required to call in advance of my flight to put it on my account every time, ask gate agent for pre boarding, and tell the FAs.

@Silvy: I’m so sorry! The people you were dealing with need retraining. They should not have done that to you!

@Stephanie Roberts: If you have told them ahead of time there should have been no issues. I feel like there are more to the story.
