Two American Airlines planes clipped wings at Washington D.C.’s Reagan National Airport (DCA). According to the FAA, this occurred around 12:45 PM Eastern Time. One plane was parked, while the other was heading to Charleston, South Carolina. The plane heading to New York’s JFK was the one taxiing and there were members of Congress onboard. Below is a clip of the breaking news from FOX News.

Adriano Espaillat, a member of the United States House of Representatives who represents New York’s 13th congressional district (which includes parts of Manhattan and the Bronx) just tweeted: “This afternoon, several members of Congress, including myself and other passengers, were involved in a minor incident where our plane clipped wings with another aircraft while taxiing at Ronald Reagan National Airport. Aviation mishaps are at an all-time high, and the Trump administration’s reckless decision to fire FAA control staff has put us all in danger. We are thankful that no one was injured and that a catastrophe was avoided.”

It’s not clear if Representative Josh Gottheimer who represents New Jersey’s 5th congressional district was on the same plane or the one that collided. He tweeted: “While waiting to take off on the runway at DCA just now, another plane struck our wing. Thankfully, everyone is safe. Just a reminder: Recent cuts to the FAA weaken our skies and public safety.”

The good news is that the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority says there is no effect on flight operations at the airport, and both aircraft have returned to their gates with no injuries reported. The FAA is investigating, so we should get more information shortly.

This is the same airport where another regional American Airlines (CRJ-700 jet) collided with a Black Hawk military helicopter back in January. What the heck is going on at DCA? This is the question weighing heavily on many people’s minds.
