A frequent traveler named Sam posted a video on TikTok about a super-friendly United Airlines flight attendant named Josh who made him a phone stand out of a paper cup on one of his flights. Well, Sam just posted a video of Josh that one of his followers came across showing Sam, and anyone else who needs a DIY phone stand on a flight, how to make it.

Inside a United Airlines plane full of passengers @sam_demma wrote in excitement yesterday: “We found Josh!!! Over 1.5 million people heard his story on TikTok and the algorithm brought us to him. This is the phone stand he made for me on my @united flight ✈️❤️” Below is the video as well as the transcript in case you’re on a flight and can’t watch videos but can get instructions:

“Hi Sam, it’s Josh. Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad to know that my little tokens of goodwill have inspired kindness in people all over the world. That’s wonderful.

I’d like to show you how to make my little phone stand. First, find the seam on your paper cup. Press in the top, then pinch down the sides to create a flat face. Tear up the sides and fold that into a flap. Next, go to the back of the cup and make a rip. Fold those rips into themselves and crush them up to form the angle of your phone stand. Finally, flip up the front and you’ll have the perfect phone stand for your flight. If you ever have me on your flight and you want a phone stand, please ask—I love making them. If not, just ask your flight attendant for a paper cup and you can make your own.”

Judging by this short video, it seems like Josh is an exceptional flight attendant and United should be happy to have him – unless of course he’s making so many of these cups – he’s costing the airline a lot of money.

Here are some of the comments from social media:

@peggyfindit: United ticket price is gonna go up. How did we use 386 cups on the flight? lol🤣🤣🤣

@woskethoughts: I used to make them out of barf bags when I traveled for work. Rip a rectangle for viewing at the bottom of the bag, place your phone inside in landscape mode and tuck the top of the bag into the slit between the tray and seat in front of you and lock the tray against the seat (default position)

@momnipotent: A Southwest attendant did that for me last year! I was amazed and it worked great.

@lesleybdickson: I once travelled by train using a banana as a phone stand. 🤷‍♀️

@wyndsongwolf11: Genius!!! Love having amazing flight attendants! They truly make flying special!

There are a lot of creative ways to make a phone stand on the go, from paper cups to barf bags and even bananas. But if you prefer to have something sturdier and more reliable, Amazon sells plenty of small, inexpensive and lightweight phone stands that are perfect for travel. This phone stand two-pack, for instance, sells for less than $10. They won’t take up much space in your carry-on and can make your in-flight entertainment experience a lot more comfortable.
