Air travel is soaring and this Labor Day weekend proved it. According to a press release issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), they screened nearly 10.4 million passengers at U.S. airport checkpoints from Friday through Monday, a 3.3% increase compared with the same period last year. Friday alone, August 29, saw almost 3 million travelers, marking the busiest pre-Labor Day Friday ever and the 15th busiest day in TSA’s nearly 24-year history.
This record-breaking activity reflects a summer of significant growth in air travel. Eight of the top ten busiest TSA travel days have occurred since late May, and the agency is on track to set an all-time annual passenger volume record. TSA Acting Deputy Administrator Adam Stahl notes, “As air travel reaches record levels, TSA is fully prepared to meet growing demand while enhancing the traveler experience and maintaining security.”
TSA’s Traveler-Friendly Initiatives
This summer, TSA rolled out new policies designed to make travel smoother and less stressful:
Shoes-On Security: No more removing your shoes at domestic airport checkpoints, helping passengers move faster through screening.
Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease: Military members get dedicated lanes at select airports, free TSA PreCheck for those who lost a family member in service, and discounted enrollment for spouses.
Families on the Fly: Families traveling with children can use dedicated lanes, enjoy discounted TSA PreCheck for family members, and benefit from easier security screening at participating airports.
TSA Tips for Hassle-Free Travel
Heading home from a holiday getaway? TSA recommends a few key steps to make security checks smoother:
Pack smart: Organize your carry-ons, check for prohibited items, and use AskTSA (text 275-872 or @AskTSA) if unsure.
Have proper ID ready: Bring your REAL ID, passport, or another approved form of identification to avoid delays.
Enroll in TSA PreCheck: Children 17 and under can accompany an adult with TSA PreCheck if noted on their boarding pass.
