There was once a time when I traveled so much that I would not only wake up in the morning and not know what city I was in but there were times when I was in a convention center and would have to look around to try and find the name of the city. Seriously.
And I’m not alone. A friend who works in the music industry told me this week that lead singers and solo artists have the name of the city they’re in taped on the stage below them so they don’t say the wrong city name when they welcome concert-goers.
Being a road warrior, I’ve learned a few tricks that I still practice today, even though I don’t travel nearly as much as I used to. Some of my tricks include always taking a picture of where I park (I did this just a few hours ago while at the hospital with my five-year-old who is battling pneumonia) and I always take photos of my hotel room number so I don’t forget.
Here’s a new tip from a flight attendant my wife follows on Instagram. Ally Case recently posted a video (embedded below) stating: “So random but I had a flight attendant tell me once that when she gets to her hotel room she puts her shoes facing the direction of the elevator so that she knows which way to go when she leaves because we’re in so many hotel rooms like how else can you remember.”

Other flight attendants and travelers who follow her agree with this is a simple but genius tip:
@amybressler: Genius. Sometimes I just leave the room and stare. Like zero recollection of how I came in 10 hours ago.
@Ashleyax: Wait a minute. Is the a mental unlock we’ve actually all been desperately needing? Yes.
@plantbasedpixiedust: Love this. I’m gonna start using it.
@maridmua: Thats a good tip👏
@nathanieloffer: I’m just a regular Joe traveler but the last hotel I was in my room was a long way down a nondescript hallway. I like this tip.

Also a good idea to place shoes by the door in the direction of the FIRE EXIT. If the hotel hallway is smoky, or you are confused & sleep deprived, this will help “point” you in the right direction. ELEVATOR is NOT the answer because they will shut down when fire alarms go off.
