When I travel, especially to great walking cities like Paris, London, Rome, New York and Chicago, I tend to walk far more than usual. Some days, I’ve clocked upwards of 25,000 steps. Heck, I sometimes walk a ton just making a connection through a major airport. Last month, I walked 3,000 steps in PHL alone. As you may or may not have noticed, I don’t wear the most stylish shoes but I don’t wear sneakers for multiple reasons, mainly because they hurt my feet. Growing up, there were times my feet hurt so much I didn’t even want to make a trip out to the mailbox.
I went to multiple podiatrists and spent way too much money on fitted insoles but nothing worked for me. I tried multiple brands of shoes and so often, they felt good in the store but after I’d walked a mile or so, I realized they were the wrong fit. I ended up donating dozens of shoes.
There are a couple of brands I like, like Clarks and Skechers but for me, it really comes down to specific shoes. The shoes I’ve been wearing almost every day for the last few years are these Skechers that I found on Amazon. I bought them online because they were so much cheaper than in the store. They work well for me and I can walk 20,000 steps a day and my feet don’t hurt.
If you can relate to the struggle of finding comfortable shoes that you can walk tens of thousands of steps in, especially when you’re on vacation and walking a lot, you will want to check this out. My friend and colleague Aly Walansky wrote an article for Travel & Leisure titled: I’m a Travel Writer, and I Swear by This $9 Trick for Keeping My Feet Comfortable While Sightseeing. Needless to say, my curiosity was piqued.
The product she’s talking about is the Body Glide Foot Glide Anti Blister Balm and here’s what she says about it:
“It seems no matter what shoes I wear I often end up with uncomfortable blisters that take forever to heal. After a few especially intense trips in a row, I took to Amazon and finally found a solution to keep my feet blister-free: Body Glide Foot Glide Anti Blister Balm. Now, this little $9 wonder is always in my carry-on. Made with clean ingredients (no parabens, phthalates, or sulfates here) this hypoallergenic, fragrance-free stick prevents blistering from friction and could not be easier to apply. You just swipe on a layer to your ankles and feet where the rubbing from your shoes occurs — and voila, no blisters for the day. It’s as simple as applying your morning deodorant.”
I never knew that something like this existed and I wish I’d known decades ago when I was struggling to find comfortable shoes that not only fit properly but that didn’t rub and give me blisters.
Vacations often involve a ton of walking, especially if you’re visiting a big walking city in Europe or even here at home like New York and Chicago. If you’ve got a favorite pair of shoes you want to pack but they sometimes give you blisters or if you’ve got a new pair of shoes you want to break in, definitely throw one of these in your bag. It doesn’t hurt to have it just in case because we all know how much blisters suck, they hurt and can ruin your plans (and, as my wife just quipped, they can ruin your outfit, too if you can’t wear the shoes you want to.)
Small, inexpensive and easy to pack, this is a great new find that I definitely won’t be traveling without. Buy it here on Amazon.
Body Glide also makes other anti-chafing products like the Body Glide Skin Glide Anti Friction, Anti Chafing Cream, which can be used on your thighs or other parts of your body and even a Body Glide Cycle Glide Balm for use on bicycles, motorcycles and horses.

Look into Orthofeet shoes. Just got back from New York City and walked 164,000 steps in my two pair of slip on shoes and sandals.
