Good news for those in Southern Connecticut. Both Avelo Airlines and Breeze Airways are competing to get passengers from the Nutmeg state and beyond – especially Southern New York. Southern Connecticut’s Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) is just 53 miles from Westchester (HPN) and LaGuardia’s (LGA) airport.

I grew up in South Norwalk, CT, which is situated between the three airports and although I’ve never flown out of HVN, I hear it’s a breeze and I know the traffic is much better than dealing with LaGuardia’s. So if you’re looking for a deal to New York City, you might want to consider these new nonstops because they’re on sale.

Today, Avelo Airlines announced they are continuing to grow Tweed-New Haven with the addition of a new nonstop route to New Orleans, and doubling of flights to Puerto Rico. Avelo is offering low, one-way fares starting at $79 from HVN. The new schedules are below and travelers can get all the details and make reservations at AveloAir.com.

New Avelo Route at Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN):

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY)
Beginning Thursday, November 14 – Thursdays and Sundays

New Orleans – Creole Cuisine, Big Brass Bands and Bourbon Street Come to Life
New Orleans is a one-of-a-kind food, culture and nightly live music destination in the United States. It’s world-renowned for its distinctive jazz music and brass bands music, Creole cuisine, unique dialects, and its annual Mardi Gras celebration. The historic heart of the city is the French Quarter, known for its French and Spanish Creole architecture where ghost tours troop past Madame LaLaurie’s mansion leading to vibrant nightlife and neon signs along Bourbon Street.

Avelo Doubles Down on Puerto Rico

San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU)
Beginning Friday, November 8, Avelo will double its frequency of flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico to four flights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Avelo will have eight Boeing Next Generation 737-800s aircraft dedicated to HVN flying to 27 nonstop destinations. FYI: Since taking its first flight at HVN in November 2021, Avelo has flown more than 2.4 million customers at Tweed on over 18,000 flights.
Breeze Airways also announced today New Haven (HVN) as the airline’s 64th city. Service from HVN will commence on December 10, with five times weekly nonstop flights to Fort Myers, and then, on the 11th, to Orlando and West Palm Beach. Nonstop flights from HVN to Vero Beach will begin December 13, and an additional six destinations will begin flying in February, including nonstop service to Charleston, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond and Sarasota-Bradenton. All destinations are available to book via the airline’s website, flybreeze.com and on the Breeze app through May 12, 2025.

Below are Breeze’s destinations, days of service, starting date and introductory fares:

From New Haven, CT to:

  • Fort Myers, FL (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri, and Sat, starting December 10, from $69* one way);
  • Orlando, FL (Tues, Wed, Thurs, Sat, and Sun, starting December 11, Daily starting February 5, 2025, from $59* one way);

  • New Orleans, LA (Thursdays and Sundays, one stop/no change of plane BreezeThru service starting February 6, 2025).

I’ve flown both Avelo and Breeze and enjoyed them both. In fact, I was on Avelo’s very first flight, which was from Burbank to Santa Rosa (Sonoma) on April 28, 2021. Here’s my trip report. In February last year, my family and I flew Breeze Airways’ first class between Los Angeles and Westchester (HPN). Here’s that trip report.
