When you apply for a new credit card, it can be easy to only think about the signup bonus, additional benefits like travel credits or free hotel nights, and the annual fee. But you should also think about your potential credit limit. High limit credit cards help keep your credit utilization ratio low. They also help you make large purchases without having to ask the bank for a temporary credit limit increase.

Banks determine your credit limit on several factors. This includes your annual income, current debt-to-income ratio, credit history, and type of credit card you’re applying for. By having a credit score of at least 700, you will have the best chance of getting a high credit limit on the best rewards credit cards.
Average Credit Limit
Knowing the typical credit limit of others with a similar credit score as yours helps you predict what credit score you can expect to qualify for. The January 2019 American Bankers Association Credit Market Report lists the average credit limit for new credit lines:
- Super Prime (781+ credit score): $10,300
- Prime (661-780 credit score): $5,653
- Sub Prime (500-600 credit score): $2,672
These averages don’t mean your credit limit will be the same. If you fall into the Prime or Super Prime category, your credit limit can be notably higher if you have a high annual income and perfect credit. As you’ll see below, the best high limit credit cards aren’t necessarily the most difficult to get.
