As summer approaches, American Airlines is preparing for what it anticipates will be its busiest travel season yet. With over 715,000 flights scheduled between May 16 and September 2, the airline is aiming to operate nearly five flights every minute. As the airline embarks on this ambitious plan, they’ve shared four things they want their customers to be aware of.

1. Arrive Early: Two Hours for Domestic, Three for International

Given the scale of operations this summer, American Airlines advises passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international departures. This isn’t new but it’s advice many of us take with a grain of salt. But this summer, this recommendation is particularly pertinent as the airline expects to handle over 50 million checked bags. Longer wait times at check-in, security and boarding are anticipated, so arriving early is crucial to ensure a smoother travel experience. And don’t forget to pop an Apple AirTag into your suitcase. According to View From the Wing, American Airlines lost a record 78,757 in July 2024, averaging 73 lost bags per 100 flights. Don’t let yours be among them this summer: Travel with carry-on only or use a luggage tracker in checked bags.

2. Download the American Airlines App

American Airlines encourages passengers to download its mobile app. The app offers features like real-time flight updates, mobile boarding passes and baggage tracking. However, it’s worth noting that while the app aims to streamline the travel process, technical glitches and connectivity issues can still occur, potentially hindering its effectiveness during peak travel times. Save pertinent information offline so you can access it anytime, anywhere and if using an Apple AirTag, use the FindMy app to locate your bags quickly. 3. Join AAdvantage and Start Earning Miles

American Airlines’ AAdvantage loyalty program is a way for travelers to earn miles on flights with American and its partner carriers. If you fly a lot or spend enough money on their affiliated credit cards and are loyal, like I am, the program also offers some amazing benefits like priority check-in and boarding, free checked bags, free seat assignments (including ones with extra legroom) and upgrades on domestic flights if there’s availability (something that is happening a lot less frequently now that AA is selling upgrades for a much cheaper price than they used to). But it’s always wise to sign up to any loyalty program be it an airline, hotel, car rental, cruise or even a grocery store, so you can get perks.

4. REAL ID or Valid Passport Required

Starting this summer, a REAL ID-compliant documentation, like a REAL-ID-compliant drivers license, valid passport or one these other forms of accepted ID) will be required for domestic air travel. This regulation aims to enhance security but may cause delays for travelers who are not prepared. Make sure you verify that your identification meets the new standards well in advance of your travel date to avoid complications at the airport.

American Airlines is making efforts to accommodate the surge in summer travelers but the scale of operations doesn’t come without challenges. From longer wait times at airports to the reliability of digital tools, passengers should be prepared for a travel experience that may require more patience and flexibility than usual. Staying informed and planning ahead will help you navigate the busy summer travel season ahead.
