A day at Universal Studios Hollywood is packed with thrills, laughs and more walking than you might think! We’ve been fortunate to visit multiple times, including this past weekend to check out the back-to-school themed Back to Hogwarts and last year’s holiday season for Grinchmas.

Universal Studios packing list.Whether you’re visiting for the first time or the tenth, packing smart can make all the difference to your day so plan ahead to ensure you have everything you need. Here’s what we recommend packing for a day at Universal Studios Hollywood:

Sun & Comfort Essentials

1. A Hat
California sun is no joke. A wide-brimmed hat or breathable baseball cap offers all-day shade, especially while standing in outdoor queues.

2. Sunscreen
Bring a small bottle of sunscreen for reapplication throughout the day. You’ll need it even on cloudy days. Our go-to choice is Ocean Potion sunscreen in SPF50.

3. Sunglasses
Don’t forget your shades … and preferably ones that won’t fall off during thrill rides. If the idea of a sunglass strap doesn’t appeal, don’t forget to tuck them away in your bag so they don’t fly off your face while you’re on a ride.

4. Crossbody Bag
Use a small crossbody bag with just enough room for essentials like your phone, wallet, and wipes. A bag like this one is easy to wear on rides and keeps you hands-free all day. If you need a larger bag for carrying more things, the Swift Large Hobo Crossbody from Baggalini is a winner, thanks to its lightweight fabric and convertible strap.

5. Backpack
For longer park days (especially with kids), a backpack is essential. We love the Quince Weatherproof Roll-Top Backpack. It’s stylish, lightweight and fits everything you need without being bulky.

Comfortable Footwear

6. Supportive Shoes
You’re going to walk a *lot*. Wear shoes with good arch support and cushioning. My husband loves the Skechers Relaxed Fit Hastings for their comfort and flexibility. While I love sneakers too, if you’re looking to upgrade your look a little without sacrificing comfort, try the Rothy’s flats – they look great, come in a variety of colors and are light as air.

Stay Cool & Dry

7. Water Bottle
Hydration is key. Bring refillable bottles with you. Universal has water refill stations around the park. (Tip: frozen water bottles stay cool longer.) A collapsible water bottle is a great option since you stash it away when you no longer need it.

8. Portable Fan
A rechargeable handheld fan can be a game changer during those long outdoor waits, especially in summer heat.

9. Ponchos

The Jurassic World ride is a guaranteed soak zone. Bring your own ponchos from Amazon (under $10 for a multi-pack), instead of paying about $12 each at the park. Guests who were finished with their ponchos were kind enough to pass them along to us and we did the same after we’d gotten off the ride, to a family who was so grateful. (And speaking of getting wet, don’t forget a portable umbrella. This pocket umbrella is super compact and easy to bring with you.)

Hygiene & Comfort

10. Hand Sanitizer + Wipes
Between handrails and touch screens, you’ll want to sanitize frequently. Throw in a small pack of hand wipes for extra clean-ups. This travel-friendly hand sanitizer is hands-down my favorite; it smells great and doesn’t dry out your hands. I also always keep the co-ordinating hand wipes from Everyone handy.

11. Toilet Seat Covers
Universal restrooms are well-maintained but having a few disposable toilet seat covers adds peace of mind, especially if you’re visiting with kids.

Gadgets & Park Extras

12. Interactive Gear
Do not forget to bring your interactive gear that enhances your Universal Studios experience. For example:

Harry Potter Wands: In the Wizarding World, interactive wands allow you to cast spells at marked spots. Kids (and adults!) will love unlocking magical effects like levitating feathers or unlocking windows. You can buy them in-park but don’t forget to bring yours from home if you have one – it will still work!

Super Nintendo World Power-Up Bands: These interactive wristbands sync with the Universal app and let you collect virtual coins, complete challenges and even battle bosses like Bowser Jr. They’re optional but they seriously enhance your experience in Super Nintendo World.

Bonus Tips & What Else to Bring

13. External Battery Pack

Your phone will be working overtime … for photos, mobile tickets, the Universal app and interactive attractions. A lightweight portable phone charger is a must.

14. Light Jacket or Layer
Evenings can get breezy, especially if you’re staying for the nighttime shows. A packable windbreaker or zip-up layer is great to have.

With the right essentials, you’ll be ready to tackle everything that Universal Studios Hollywood has to offer, from the Studio Tour and battling Decepticons to sipping Butterbeer and beating Bowser all in one unforgettable day.

So, charge your devices, slip on those comfy shoes and get ready for a picture-perfect, ride-filled adventure in the heart of Hollywood.
