I’ve written plenty of tips about how to keep your belongings safe while traveling, and one of the biggest concerns is pickpocketing. Thieves often target tourist hotspots, crowded trains, subways, buses, boats and even just while walking down the street.
On a press trip to Europe, a woman traveling with me had her wallet stolen from her purse in a church in Germany on Palm Sunday. We were simply walking through the church with the crowd, and just like that, it was gone.
Pickpocketing occurs often, so it’s important to be proactive and take smart precautions. Some tactics include wearing your backpack on your chest rather than your back, using an anti-theft crossbody bag, or, as Rick Steves recommends, using a money belt under your clothes. I interviewed Rick for my podcast, and he shared that he’s been pickpocketed three times in his life, including once in Paris. Here’s his story.

Typically, pickpockets work in groups of three. Oftentimes, two people will stand on either side of the victim to block public view, while a third member reaches into their bag. Recently, a video (embedded above) surfaced showing pickpockets in action in London, highlighting just how easy it is for thieves to operate. Here are some comments from viewers that really stood out:
@Wiprartono: “Why didn’t the person who made the video take action?”
@annboddy: “It happened to me. They always do it when there’s lots of people, pushing and shoving. You can’t feel it.”
@Verakimou: “I’ve kept my bag worn diagonally under my coat or jacket for years. It’s practical and safe. Not just in London—try it worldwide! A soft, small bag works best.”
@Caterinataylorm: “Always the gypsy women. Orlando has them now, too.”
@notactive24987: “This is why I wear a pouch under my jacket. Good luck, pickpockets!”
