A friend of mine turned me on to the vacation rental platform Whimstay a few years ago but I never got around to trying them out. However, when I was planning this summer’s trip to Europe, which was built around inexpensive American Airlines award tickets and a week-long apartment rental in Italy, I decided to check them out.

Whimstay was founded in San Francisco in 2020 and they specialize in last-minute vacation rental deals. They focus on bookings made within 30 days of check-in and the company works with both professional property managers and independent hosts. According to the company, they’ve booked more than 2 million nights, helping travelers save significant money on accommodations.
Think of Whimstay the same way you thought of Hotwire back in the early 2000s. It was one of the biggest sites for booking deeply discounted last-minute hotel rooms. The only difference is that with Hotwire, you wouldn’t know the hotel name until after booking, which helped hotels fill unsold rooms. What Whimstay does is focus specifically on last-minute inventory and discounted stays, often helping property managers fill otherwise empty nights.
So Whimstay is more targeted toward travelers who are flexible and looking for better pricing closer to their travel dates, rather than booking months in advance. And that’s exactly why it worked so well for me.
I booked our June 2026 plane tickets back in September 2025, right after I had booked an Airbnb in Italy (I had a credit that was expiring on August 31, 2025), so I needed to find a place to stay in either Paris or Copenhagen.
FYI: The great thing about American Airlines miles is that you can book award tickets and cancel them if you find a better deal. I booked two different itineraries: The first was LAX-CDG on Air Tahiti Nui for 30,000 miles apiece. The second was for two days later LAX-PHL-CPH, for just 19,000 miles. Of course, I wanted to do the latter since it was a better deal, but a six-hour layover in Philadelphia wasn’t ideal, and it was cutting it too close to a river cruise we were booked on (more on that later).
Instead, I kept the tickets to Copenhagen just in case our Air Tahiti Nui flight was canceled or one of us got sick. I then canceled the Copenhagen flight when we were on the plane to Paris. Here’s my trip report on LAX to CDG on Air Tahiti Nui.
Whimstay vs. Airbnb: A Key Difference
The big difference between Whimstay and Airbnb is timing and pricing strategy:
Whimstay: Best for last-minute bookings (typically within 30 days). Hotels and property managers reduce prices to avoid vacancies and those savings are passed on to travelers.
Airbnb: Best for early planning, wider inventory and more consistent availability across all price ranges and booking windows.
For this stay in Paris, Whimstay’s model made it possible to access a high-end, two-bedroom, centrally located apartment at a much more competitive rate than what similar properties would typically cost on other platforms.

Once we booked the three-night stay on Rue de Ponthieu in Paris’ 8th Arrondissement, just a block off the Champs-Élysées, we really started planning. In previous articles, I wrote about how we arranged for a Daytrip ride from CDG to our apartment because the apartment wasn’t ready until 2 p.m. at the earliest (normally it’s 4 p.m.) and we landed at 9 a.m. To kill that time, we went to Sunday Mass at Notre-Dame and did a little other sightseeing.
First Impressions
Our apartment was located in an excellent area, just steps from the Champs-Élysées. The apartment is in a beautiful and quintessentially Parisian Haussman building, hidden behind a discreet entrance that opens into an elegant residential property with a mix of offices and apartment rentals.
Access was straightforward, with entry codes provided for all three doors leading to the apartment. Paris apartments are known for either having no elevator or a very small one. Fortunately, this one had the latter because we were on the third floor and our bags were heavy. But only I fit in the elevator with our two checked bags.
The spiral staircase was beautiful, so we used the stairs every time except on arrival and departure when we had luggage.
The apartment was great. Before arriving, I worried that staying so close to the Champs-Élysées would feel too touristy but in reality, the neighborhood had a very local feel.
There was an excellent mini grocery store just a block away, along with a neighborhood bakery that became part of our daily routine. Every morning, I picked up fresh baguettes and pastries, and we often made our own ham and cheese sandwiches for outings around the city.

One morning, I bought a large baguette, two chocolate croissants and one plain croissant. Amount: $8.27 USD.
Living Space
The apartment was comfortable overall. The hardwood floors were noticeably creaky so it was hard to sneak to the bathroom in the middle of the night without waking my wife. There was one bathroom, two double beds and a pull-out couch in the living room, which my 9-year-old slept on. I wasn’t expecting that. I thought he would want to share a bed with me but he’s growing up quickly and was happy to camp out solo in the living room. My wife and our 6-year-old daughter slept in the other bedroom.
If you’re a light sleeper, you might want to wear earplugs because once in a while you can hear other renters walking up the grand staircase. I also smelled cigarette smoke a couple of times, but thankfully it didn’t last long. Ah, Paris!

Laundry
The apartment includes a kitchenette and a washing machine, which is valuable if you’ve got kids or are booking a longer stay. FYI: The washing machine was not intuitive to operate without assistance from ChatGPT (just upload a photo of it to get help). I never would have been able to figure it out on my own.
There was no dryer but I got creative and used the heated towel rack in the bathroom to dry some of our smaller items and it worked like a charm.
They only provide one laundry pod, which is sufficient for adults but isn’t nearly enough when traveling with little kids. The good news is that the mini Carrefour grocery store a block away sells them, or you can bring your own from home like we did (we never travel without laundry pods and Tide Laundry Stain Remover Spray with Oxi). You can also bring detergent sheets, which are kind of like Bounce sheets except they’re detergent; they’re great for travelers who travel with carry-on only.
Note: I’m not sure if this is typical with other apartment rentals in Paris, but if we had arrived before check-in, the only place to store our bags was the property manager’s office, which was about a mile away. If this happens to you, use a service like Bounce. That was my back-up plan if we hadn’t used Daytrip to sightsee during the hours between our flight’s arrival and our apartment check-in time. There was a business just a block away that could have stored all of our bags for $30.
Entertainment
There was one television with access to streaming platforms, but the local channels were unclear. A previous guest’s Netflix account was still logged in, which we logged out of at checkout for them. TIP: Always set a reminder to log out of your streaming services when you’re staying at a vacation rental.
Overall Impression
Our apartment was clean and modern and offered everything we needed for our stay. For travelers wanting to experience Paris while maintaining easy access to major attractions, the location of our apartment was hard to beat. We would definitely stay there again and would absolutely use Whimstay to book future stays.
