If you’re a frequent traveler with an iPhone and Apple Watch, this little-known tip might just save you from the mild panic of losing your phone, whether it’s at home, by the pool or in a hotel room.

I recently found myself at the pool with my 5-year-old, laser focused on watching her splash around with friends. Somewhere between sunscreen applications and snack runs, I completely forgot where I’d left my phone. I figured it would turn up eventually but my wife’s friend casually said, “Just ask your watch to find it.”

I thought she was joking. She wasn’t.

Sure enough, I tapped the water droplet icon on my Apple Watch (since it was in waterproof mode) and then pressed the digital crown to “eject” the water just like you’re supposed to after swimming. Then I raised my wrist and said:

“Hey Siri, find my phone.”

And boom … my iPhone started pinging from a lounge chair 30 yards away, right where I’d stopped to grab some Cheetos. I couldn’t believe I didn’t know about this. And it came in handy again a few days later when I misplaced my phone at home.

If you didn’t know about this feature either, you’re not alone and that’s why I’m sharing it here.

Here’s how to use your Apple Watch to find your iPhone:

  1. Make sure your iPhone and Apple Watch are connected via Bluetooth and are both powered on. They need to be in range of each other for this to work.
  2. Swipe up on your Apple Watch face to open Control Center.
  3. Tap the phone icon (it looks like a vibrating phone). Your iPhone will instantly make a pinging sound even if it’s on silent.
Bonus tip: If you hold down the ping button your phone will also flash its LED light. Super helpful in a dark room.
  4. If your Apple Watch is in water lock mode: Tap the water droplet to unlock then turn the Digital Crown to eject any water before using voice commands.
  5. Or just say, “Hey Siri, find my phone” and your iPhone will start beeping.

This tip might sound simple but it’s a game changer, especially for travelers juggling kids, carry-ons and coffee cups. Don’t waste time digging through bags or retracing your steps at the airport, pool or hotel room. Let your wrist do the work.

If you didn’t know this feature existed welcome to the club. But now you do and I promise you’ll use it more often than you think.
