I discovered City Guesser, a fun travel website, this week that tests your geography knowledge of places you’ve visited. I played it for an hour this morning with my eight-year-old son and he couldn’t get enough of it. Below is a screenshot from one of our clues.
City Guesser was created during the pandemic with the goal of allowing users to experience the world in a new way. The gamified aspect of City Guesser offers a unique virtual travel experience that you won’t find anywhere else.
The website is simple to use. Users can choose from different regions (USA, Europe, Monuments, Canada, Russia, United Kingdom, France, Asia, Japan, India, Brazil, Australia, and Argentina). You can also play Worldwide, which is what my son and I mostly did.
Some of the videos are crystal clear and feature giveaway clues like major monuments, license plates, street signs or business names. You can also listen to the audio to hear the language passersby are speaking. We got a few videos that were so easy, we guessed the correct city in a second thanks to clues like the Eiffel Tower, CN Tower, Brandenburg Gate and the NYC subway.
Other videos are a bit trickier, unless you can spot a flag, which sometimes appears in a reflection or in plain sight. That came in handy for me during a video filmed in Malaysia.
The videos are sourced from YouTube, with contributors simply posting their footage titled “City Guesser Video” followed by the city featured. Videos need to be at least five minutes long and filmed in a desktop aspect ratio.
If you’re looking to test your travel knowledge or just want to explore new places from your own home, check out City Guesser. You can even create a private server and invite friends to play along.
My son and I give it two thumbs up!
