I’ve reported on some crazy things before but this has to be listed near the top of that list. According to Reuters, “a Spirit Airlines flight destined for the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince was struck by gunfire on Monday, forcing it to be diverted to the neighboring Dominican Republic. Spirit said in a statement that the plane had been damaged and taken out of commission upon landing in the northern Dominican city of Santiago.”
The Associated Press is reporting that Haiti’s international airport shut down temporarily after gangs opened fire at the Spirit Airlines flight. The AP says, “the latest violence came as a new prime minister was sworn in. The flight, headed from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Port-Au-Prince, was hit multiple times by gunfire as it was set to land in Haiti’s capital, striking a flight attendant, who suffered minor injuries.”
A Fly Guy’s Travel posted photos and videos (embedded below) of the aftermath showing the bullet holes dotting the interior of a plane. A Fly Guy captioned his post: “Spirit Airlines flight NK951, an Airbus A320, was struck by gunfire as it prepared to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The incident forced the plane, which originated from Fort Lauderdale (FLL), to divert to El Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago, Dominican Republic. According to sources, a flight attendant sustained a minor injury, reportedly grazed by a bullet. The incident has led to the suspension of all flights in and out of Port-au-Prince’s airport, highlighting serious security concerns around the area. A video from the aircraft’s crew shows bullet impacts on the plane’s exterior.”

With all of Haiti’s civil unrest, I’m shocked that airlines are still flying there and won’t be surprised if they cease flying until things have calmed down.
