You don't always have to rent a car from the airport locationEach Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Tim M., who adds to last week’s reader tip by saying:

“I try not to get my car at the airport. As a regular visitor to Phoenix, I’ll get a Lyft to where I’m staying and rent from the local/neighborhood National, Budget etc. office and save about $100 dollars in extra fees and taxes the airport rentals add on.”

Thanks, Tim!

This is a great tip, as a regular traveller, I am always looking to save a dollar here and there. Thank you for sharing

A smart tip and I usually spend some money on airport taxi’s. Another tip would be having a particular cab driver at destinations you always visit and call them when you are about to visit. Thanks Johnny

Some cities have a way to rip you off by knowing you are coming right from an airport and charging high fees anyway. Maybe Orlando?

i’m a sucker for the extra 2,500 miles that UA gives for airport rentals … but hadn’t thought of comparing with neighborhood shops. thanks for the tip

I did that in PHX once but Enterprise gave away my minivan! I was pissed! We wasted a whole day for them to track down a van. A big 12 or 15 seat Ford Transit. Luckily I can drive that but it surely ate into my gas budget driving to the Grand Canyon and back. They said they called the day before but I was flying to PHX from HNL. Next time I do that in PHX I am calling to confirm!

I do this occasionally and it is less. Mainly for location though. Watch the hours! Unlike airport locations these are not open 24 hours

When I travel to Phoenix, I always rent from Enterprise in Cave Creek. I book for the morning after my arrival and drop it off the day before my flight out. Luckily, I have a friend in Scottsdale to take me to the rental office both times. Last February, this saved me about half of the estimated rental cost at the airport.
