In a bittersweet turn for locals and frequent travelers, the iconic “LAX” letters that have long greeted visitors to Los Angeles International Airport are being dismantled, though fortunately, it’s only temporary. The change comes as part of a sweeping roadway improvement initiative around one of the nation’s busiest airports.

Crews began removing the three massive 30- to 32-foot letters this week, starting with the “X,” followed by the “A,” and concluding with the “L.” According to FOX LA, the dismantling process commenced on Thursday evening, with work projected to take about a week. The letters will be stored locally and later reinstalled as part of the revamped roadway design, where they will be placed adjacent to a sidewalk, a new opportunity for travelers to approach and photograph the beloved symbol.

The decision to remove the sign reflects the broader objectives of LAX’s modernization program, officially known as the Airfield & Terminal Modernization Program. The centerpiece of this phase involves the complete reconfiguration of the roadway system around the airport, particularly Sepulveda Boulevard. By separating airport-bound traffic from local commuters, improving pedestrian zones, enhancing signage, and providing more seamless access to economy parking, the project aims to reduce congestion and improve safety and user experience.

According to CBS News, Michael Christensen, Chief Airport Development Officer for Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), described the removal as a “significant milestone” toward transforming LAX into “a more efficient and accessible airport.” He emphasized the long-term benefits the initiative will bring to travelers, employees and surrounding communities, ultimately contributing to a “world-class airport experience”.

The modernization efforts are expected to span several years, with completion anticipated by 2030. One crucial consideration is ensuring that LAX remains fully operational during major upcoming global events, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics hosted in Los Angeles.

For many Angelenos and visitors, the “LAX” sign has served as a snapshot-worthy landmark and emotional arrival point.
In addition to removing the sign, the airport entrance’s colorful 100-foot pylons, another visual hallmark, will also be relocated as part of the plan.

While travelers may soon say farewell to the sign as they know it, the landmark is not disappearing; it’s just being prepped for a new chapter. Once the modernization is complete, the updated gateway promises smoother traffic flow, safer pedestrian access, and a refreshed visual welcome for arrivals to Los Angeles.
