It’s hard to argue with the fact that the late President Jimmy Carter was one of the most influential and generous former presidents, dedicating his post-presidential years to humanitarian efforts, including his work with Habitat for Humanity, his global health initiatives, and his commitment to peace and human rights through the Carter Center.
One of the late President Carter’s most significant contributions to shaping modern-day America was his effort to transform the commercial airline industry.
According to Fox Business, “The former president signed the bipartisan Airline Deregulation Act on Oct. 24, 1978, to prohibit “states from regulating the price, route or service of an air carrier for the purposes of keeping national commercial air travel competitive.” After the bill was signed into law, airlines were allowed to select their own routes and determine how much they would charge passengers in air travel fares.”

Over the years, I’ve seen multiple video on social media of Jimmy Carter flying on commercial airlines in coach and he would always walk up and down the aisle shaking hands. Delta Air Lines just shared one of those videos (embedded above) today from a passenger with the caption: “Every time Jimmy Carter flew Delta, he shook hands with each person on the plane. Because that’s who he was. Someone who treated people as people. Today we celebrate his life – a great friend, family man, Nobel Peace Prize winner and leader who showed us all how to properly treat those around us. Rest in peace, Mr. President. Your legacy lives on.”
I feel the same way as one person who responded saying, “Beautiful. A beautiful human.” Another wrote: “Yes! I was on one of those flights! A true gem.”

I also just watched a PBS interview (embedded above) with him and his late wife Rosalynn Carter about the secret to their 77-year marriage. It is so sweet, I have to share it.
JUDY WOODRUFF: Mrs. Carter, what is the secret to this partnership?
ROSALYNN CARTER, Former First Lady: Well, I think we give each other space and we try to do things together. We’re always looking for things we can do together, like birding and fly-fishing and just anything we can find to do together.
JUDY WOODRUFF: And, President Carter, I think people look at this long and happy marriage, and I think they’d love to know what — especially couples who have been through what the two of you have been through, what’s the secret, when you don’t see eye to eye on something, for how you patch it back together?
JIMMY CARTER, Former President of the United States: At the end of the day, we try to become reconciled and overcome all the differences that arose during the day. We also make up and give each other a kiss before we go to sleep still in bed. And we always read the Bible every night, which adds a different aspect to life. So, we really try to become completely reconciled each night before we go to sleep.”
Sage advice for all. Rest in Peace, President Carter.

As a former airline crew member, I can also vouch for how wonderful JImmy was onboard one of my flights. He and Rosalyn boarded and he made his way thru the entire cabin stopping and talking and shaking everyone’s hands…..including the catering employee who was busy boarding our supplies. In fact, it so shocked the caterer that he almost fell out the catering door ! Down to earth in all respects. My wife also met Rosalyn during her time doing volunteer work…she too was equally lovely and a true gem of a person. Sadly, we miss them both…..especially in today’s world. The happy news is that the two of them are now reunited…..and I am sure there are some homes to build in heaven !
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing and I saw this cute cartoon about them today https://www.threads.net/@mikeluckovich/post/DENV0npp5tp
