I know a lot of people are planning to go to Hawaii this summer. Surprisingly, it’s the busiest time of year for the 50th state although I would have bet it was the winter, for obvious reasons. The New York Times recently wrote a 36 hours in Honolulu guide for things to do and see but Guy Kawasaki has an even better one.
Kawasaki is best known as a legendary Apple evangelist and bestselling author but he’s also a Honolulu native with deep roots on Oahu. In a recent post on Threads, he shared a Google document with his local guide to the best places to eat, shop, surf and explore in Honolulu. He wrote, “Going to Honolulu. Let me enhance your trip.”

I’ve met Guy a couple of times, including once outside an ice cream shop in Ko Olina, and he’s as kind as he is smart. I’ve been to many of the places he recommends and always agree with his suggestions. Here’s his list, with my additions (mostly photos) and context for travelers:
Eat
- House Without a Key at Halekulani (Pictured above): Perfect for a blowout brunch after a fancy dinner. Served 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Koko Head Cafe: This is the place for breakfast. Go at 7 a.m. when they open to avoid the wait.
- Foodland Farms at Ala Moana Center: Great spot to grab groceries or snacks. The poke is excellent, but the locals know to get the chocolate haupia Ted’s Pies.
- Roy’s: The Asian fusion OG. Order the chocolate souffle as soon as you sit down.
- Akasaka: Hidden gem sushi spot that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into Japan.
- Sekiya’s Restaurant & Delicatessen: Across from Kaimuki High School. Affordable, authentic Japanese-local comfort food.
- Gyotaku: A little more upscale than Sekiya’s, but still casual Japanese family-style fare.
- Leonard’s Bakery: The line is long but worth it for malasadas. Don’t skip the haupia and chocolate ones.
- Diamond Head Market & Grill: Specifically the blueberry cream cheese scone. It’s life changing.
- Waiola Shave Ice: One mile from Waikiki and arguably the best shave ice on the island.
- Zippy’s: Hawaii’s version of Denny’s but with local flavor. Try the Zip Mein.
- Da Cove Health Bar & Cafe: Go for the “Hawaiian” acai bowl.
- Rainbow Drive-In: Classic plate lunch spot.
- Kapiolani College Farmers Market (Saturdays only): A great spot to sample local produce and eats.
- Koala Moa: For amazing huli huli chicken.
- Nisshodo Mochi: Pick up mochi and manju after Koala Moa.
- Honolulu Kitchen: Home of the deep-fried manapua. Yes, that’s a real thing.
- Kualoa Coconut Man: Located at 48-343 Kamehameha Highway on the ocean side. Best coconuts ever.
Shop
- Ala Moana Center (pictured above): The largest open-air shopping mall in the world. Something for everyone.
- Island Boy Shop: Think art gallery meets fashion boutique. Unique and stylish finds.
- Fabric Mart: If you’re into sewing or crafts, don’t miss this fabric emporium. Head to the main location in Aiea.
Surf
- Ohana Surf Project: Excellent surf lessons for all levels. Use promo code “friendofguy” for the kamaaina discount.
- Koa Board Sports: Affordable board rentals.
- Surf Garage: Good place to rent or buy boards.
- Publics Surf Spot: Mellow and less crowded than Queen’s. Great for beginners with an instructor.
See
- Diamond Head Hike (Pictured above): Iconic, but one time may be enough. Reserve your spot in advance.
- Bishop Museum: A must-see to understand Hawaiian culture and history.
- Honolulu Museum of Art: Beautiful collection in a serene space.
- Byodo-In Temple: Replica of a Japanese temple nestled in the lush Valley of the Temples.
- Polynesian Cultural Center: An immersive cultural experience with traditional shows and food.
Bonus
After soaking up all that local flavor, check out Guy’s content:
I’ve been fortunate to the islands over 30 times, including last month when my family and I went to Oahu and stayed at the newly rebranded Ritz-Carlton Residences at Turtle Bay, experienced the renovations at Hilton Hawaiian Village (story coming soon), toured Kualoa Ranch and watched the new Cirque du Soleil show.

For Diamond Head, once is not enough. Me and my spouse hiked it early morning, almost every day when we were there.
