Anyone who flies with any degree of frequency probably has a story or two to tell about something crazy they’ve witnessed in the airport or on an airplane. A TikToker who goes by the handle @allyjaksen definitely does. She recently posted a series of videos about a nightmare flight involving one of the top foods to avoid on a plane, on Alaska Airlines from Anchorage to Seattle.

An Alaska Airlines passenger opened up a can of tuna fish on the airplane.In her first video, @allyjaksen captures her seatmate opening up a can of tuna and getting ready to eat. She writes, “Canned tuna on the plane gotta be up there in terms of crimes against humanity.”

Google ‘foods to avoid on a plane’ and you’ll find all kinds of answers from things flight attendants advise passengers avoid (like tea and coffee made with tap water from the plane’s water tank), foods that make you feel gassy and bloated, highly processed, high-sodium foods that can make you feel dehydrated and of course, stinky foods that could be overbearing to fellow passengers in the cabin.

Apparently, @allyjaksen’s seatmate didn’t get the memo about the latter. And of course, the video, which at the time of this publication has racked up 1.2 million views, also got lots of comments, like:

scandalous.slug02496: This should be a CRIME

Senoritasmiles: No fly list, immediately 😭

alex: ok but i was on a flight once where someone opened a bag of boiled eggs. 😩

macklovesbeyonce: I’m so sorry this is actually traumatic 😭

If opening up a can of tuna (in a middle seat, no less) isn’t bad enough, @allykjansen says things got much, much worse. “I need to talk about that flight,” she says in her follow-up post. “It wasn’t just the tuna. This guy was literally in the textbook for someone you do not want to sit next to on the plane.” When he sat down, she says she was immediately hit by “a wall of smell” but she tries to get past it. But things went downhill from there and she details it all in her second video:

@allyjaksen Replying to @scandalous.slug02496 STORY TIME: it wasn’t just the tuna 😭 #alaskaairlines #airplane #airplanehorrorstory ♬ original sound – allyjaksen

As you can see from the video, it’s got all the elements of a good nightmare flight scenario: Body odour, tuna fish, Bloody Mary burps and a screaming baby thrown in for good measure.

The top foods to avoid on a plane

Earlier this year, Casino.ca conducted a vacation etiquette survey gauging America and Canada’s biggest travel pet peeves. Not surprisingly, 91% of respondents said it was rude to bring strong-smelling food onto the plane.

Similarly, travel search engine Kayak breaks down the rules of flying, including foods to avoid on a plane, and says that 92% of passengers say that smelly foods are a hard no, including tinned fish, raw fish, seafood, pizza, hardboiled eggs and BBQ ribs. (Incidentally, 61% of respondents said they didn’t mind the smell of airport fast food … )

You might think the rules of flying are pretty simple but apparently they’re not to everyone. So the next time you’re wondering if something is okay, consider consulting those travel etiquette survey results to help you read the room. It’s important to be considerate of your fellow fliers. And always remember that under no circumstances is tuna fish an acceptable snack on an airplane.
