I’m a huge baseball fan – especially of my beloved New York Yankees since I grew up just 42 miles from The House that Ruth Built. But unlike some of my friends, I root for the Mets when they’re in the playoffs, except for when they play the Yankees or the Dodgers (my second favorite team since I moved to Los Angeles 30 years ago).

Pete Alonso and Howie Rose on Mets Delta flight.
So when the New York Mets came from behind in dramatic fashion a couple of nights ago in Milwaukee, I was quite happy and listening to longtime Mets announcer make the call that would give any Mets fan goosebumps.

To set the stage, the Mets were trailing the Brewers 2-0 in the ninth inning, but after a walk and a hit, Pete Alonso stepped to the plate with one out and hit a home run that Mets fans will never forget.

You can watch the homer and listen to Howie’s call in the video embedded below. You can also read the transcript below the video.

“William sets. Here’s the pitch. Swinging a fly ball to right field. Pretty well hit, freely back at the wall. He jumps! It’s gone! He did it! He did it! Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career. Pumps his fists as he rounds second, it’s a three-run homer! He’s given the Mets a 3 to 2 lead. They all pour out of the dugout. Alonso on his way to home plate. They’re waiting for him. He hits the plate.”

As I told my wife, I knew the Mets’ plane ride to Philadelphia where they’re playing today was going to be a fun one.

Sure enough it was. And it started off with someone playing Howie Rose’s call and filming him sitting in coach on the team’s charter plane. He didn’t realize what was going on and like many people who hear their voice being played, he covered his ears. But when he figured out it was to honor his call and pump the team up, he was all in. What I loved about the video, besides the obvious, was seeing the players flying coach on a Delta Air Lines plane. It gave fans a glimpse of what it’s like to fly on a Delta charter. It’s just a regular 757 but they have dedicated sections for managers (first class), media, staff and players. You can see a piece of paper taped to the seat with “Zone C Traveling Staff” printed on it about midway through the aircraft.

One of my friends who played for the Yankees told me that when they flew, the press sat in between the coaches and players and that they kept 2 or three rows empty between the media and players so they couldn’t eavesdrop. They also put the rookies in the first rows of the player section and the senior members at the back. Most of them had their own row since the plane can hold almost 200 people and there are only 26 players on a team and probably another 50 people that travel with them.
