Heading to the beach? Here’s a crucial tip: Keep your valuables on you in a waterproof pouch or fanny pack. Two recent incidents detailed by the Manhattan Beach Police Department in California show why this matters.
Incident #1: On October 19th, a beachgoer left their car keys hidden on the front grill of their car while they headed to the El Porto area for the beach. When they returned, their passenger door was unlocked, the glove compartment open and their cellphone, wallet and credit cards were gone.
Incident #2: The very next day, October 20th, another visitor parked their Porsche Cayenne in the El Porto lot and placed the key fob in the vehicle’s gas cap before going surfing. Upon returning, they discovered their key fob, cellphone and wallet had been stolen.
These stories aren’t meant to scare you, they’re meant to help you plan ahead and protect your belongings.
Top Tips for Keeping Your Valuables Safe at the Beach:
- Never hide keys on or around your car. Thieves know common hiding spots like bumpers, tire wells or gas caps.
- Use a waterproof key pouch. Wrist, ankle or swimsuit-friendly pouches let you carry keys and small essentials safely while swimming or surfing.
- Leave valuables at home or in a secure locker. If it’s not necessary for your beach day, it’s safest to leave it behind.
- Use electronic or keyless entry if available. Store keys in a secure hidden compartment inside your car and use a waterproof wristband or code to access your vehicle.
A little planning can make a huge difference. Keep your valuables with you and enjoy your time in the waves without any unwanted surprises.
