A newlywed couple found themselves in quite the dilemma when Delta oversold their flight. According to a Reddit post, Delta initially offered $1,500 each to give up their seats but the couple declined. After all, they had already lost a day due to the previous day’s cancellation and didn’t want to miss more time from their 15-day honeymoon.

But when the airline sweetened the deal to $2,500 per person, plus hotel accommodations and Lyft vouchers, they couldn’t resist. They took the deal and then turned to Reddit to ask the community: Would you miss one day of your honeymoon for $5,000?

The responses were quick, passionate and hilarious. I could relate to some of them.

One user summed it up simply: “In a NY minute!!!”

Another said, “Sure, that’s a second honeymoon,” with someone replying, “Round two on Delta—thank you very much.”

Others shared their own lucrative travel trade-offs:

“Flying home from Hawaii overnight, my wife and I were offered $1,500 each to go from first class to business. Easy money. We were sleeping anyway and we got 3 more trips out of that credit.”

“I had a bad string of Delta flights, and ended up collecting almost $6K worth of credits. Taking the family to Tokyo on their nickel this Christmas.”

Some saw the $5,000 as a missed dream. “It hurts to see someone else living your dream,” one user joked. Another said, “If it meant one less day for me in Bora Bora, then no!”

Of course, there were some strong opinions about relationship dynamics too. One commenter wrote, “Divorce is much more expensive than $5K!” while another warned, “Finding out immediately that you married an idiot is priceless though.”

Someone else chimed in with perhaps the most memorable take: “You have a hotel room with a bed in it, and you have $5,000 you didn’t have… order room service and get naked.”

For some, the debate came down to priorities. “Only if both people wanted to,” wrote one top commenter. “This is one of those things that no matter how cost-effective it is… it’s not worth making your spouse miss a day of their honeymoon if they don’t want to.”

I think it’s a no-brainer for anyone without an over-the-top honeymoon planned, especially if both partners agree and they have two full weeks. But if you’re heading out on a cruise or staying in exclusive, non-refundable hotels, I wouldn’t take the risk. This is also a good reminder to always arrive at your cruise port at least a day or two early.

So, what would you do? Take the $5,000 and delay paradise for a day or board the plane and leave the money on the table?

FYI: The photo above is from my honeymoon a dozen years ago. Here’s where we were flying to. We ended up here.
