A mommy blogger is going viral because of her airplane hack when traveling with a toddler but while some call it brilliant, others say it’s cruel. The mother of two captioned her video: “The best airplane travel hack”.

In the video, the mother of two, named Lisa Flom, puts Velcro tape on the seat and on her toddler’s onesie so it’s perfectly lined up. She then sits him down on the seat and shows he can’t move to get up. On the one hand it’s pretty clever since everyone who has ever had a toddler knows that once they’ve learned to walk, they love to just run all over the place, including up and down the aisle of an airplane. But I would imagine that it wouldn’t take long for the child to get so frustrated that they can’t move that they would end up bawling. Watch the embedded video below:

Most of the commenters seemed to be from people who don’t have kids and that’s probably a good thing since many of them were pretty mean, like:

user1441764795936: Dog kennel in the cargo area also works.

Others wanted to know if the Velcro left a mess on the seat.

Lilly: So after you pull it off the next passenger has to sit in the sticky tape residue?

Lilly obviously didn’t watch the whole video because after the tape was lifted off the seat, you can see there’s no residue.

Here are some of the other popular comments from TikTok and Instagram, where the video was posted:

Maria Reynolds: Until 5 seconds later with my child would use their vocal chords to express their frustration ?

Topshotdustin: Suddenly there is a naked baby running around a plane ?

NOUDEL: Does it work on 36 year old kid?

Samantha: Car seat. He’s safest in the car seat

Jazzzhands: Cute but I’m almost positive FAA regulations require a child of that size to be in an adults lap.

Actually, the FAA recommends the opposite for children under two years old. This is directly from the FAA website: “The safest place for your child under the age of two on a U.S. airplane is in approved child restraint system (CRS) or device, not in your lap. Your arms aren’t capable of holding your in-lap child securely, especially during unexpected turbulence. ‘Unrestrained lap children are prone to in-flight injuries, particularly during meal service or turbulence,’ according to a 2019 study by the National Institutes of Health. The FAA strongly urges you to secure your child in an approved CRS or other approved device for the entirety of your flight. Buying a ticket for your child is the only way to guarantee that you will be able to use a CRS. It’s the smart and right thing to do so that everyone in your family arrives safely at your destination.”

Looks like Samantha has the best advice.

My wife and I are the parents of two little ones (ages four and seven) so we’ve lived through the challenging toddler years and know that it’s not always easy traveling with toddlers on an airplane. But it would never occur to us to restrain our kids like this. As one commenter said, I think this would only last for a short time before our kids expressed their frustration, likely in loud screams of protestation. Instead of Velcro tape, here are the 14 things my wife and I used to keep our kids entertained on an airplane when they were younger.
