My family and I just returned home from an amazing trip to Chicago, where we stayed at the 21C Museum Hotel. When we checked in, the hotel receptionist handed me our keys in a paper sleeve that had our room number written on it, as well as the WIFi code. Handy! However, at dinner, my wife Natalie noticed I still had the key card in the sleeve and mentioned it. “You shouldn’t keep your key card in the sleeve with your room number on it,” she said. She was absolutely right. I don’t normally do this but had been in such a rush while we were checking in, that I forgot.
A Simple Tip For Staying Safe in Your Hotel Room
So, here’s a simple but important tip for staying safe and avoiding a headache at hotels: When you check in and receive your room key, don’t carry it around in the sleeve if your room number is written on it. If you lose it or someone takes it, they would have easy access to your room. Instead, take a quick photo of the sleeve or write the room number down if you’re worried you’ll forget it. Then throw the sleeve away in your hotel room trash.
Front desk staff are trained not to say your room number out loud for this very reason. Your privacy and safety matter and writing it down is a discreet way to help you remember it without risking your security.

Another Smart Move
Always ask for two key cards if you’re not using mobile check-in. Hotel keys can sometimes be programmed incorrectly or deactivated if they come in contact with your phone or other cards. And if you’re staying at a large hotel or resort, especially somewhere like Vegas, the last thing you want is to walk all the way back to the front desk and wait in line again because your only key card doesn’t work.
It’s a small adjustment that can make your hotel stay a lot smoother and safer.
