You might’ve seen on the news that a not-so-quick-thinking American Airlines passenger flushed a diaper down the loo on an August 31 flight from Phoenix to Kona. The other toilet on the plane was overflowing, so the flight attendants asked passengers from that point on to pee in a bag. Obviously, it’s far from ideal, but what are the other options when you’re over the Pacific Ocean with no place to land?
A similar situation happened to me on a flight from Boston to L.A. The captain got on the PA and announced that someone had flushed something other than toilet paper and that we (as a plane) were down to one toilet. If the other one broke, the captain said, we’d have to divert (most likely to Denver). Fortunately, the toilet didn’t break and we made it to L.A., but the point of this tip is simple. Don’t flush anything down the airplane toilet other than human waste and toilet paper—or you might be peeing in a bag or getting diverted.
