Toothbrush hotel room

Each Friday, we feature a reader-submitted tip as our Travel Tip of the Day. This week’s tip comes from reader Patricia B., who says:

“Consider protecting toiletries, especially your toothbrush! Never thought I would need to be concerned about this but talked to someone who actually had this happen to him. Traveling in Europe a couple years ago, a friend forgot his jacket so returned to his room to collect it. The maid was cleaning the room so he walked in and discovered her in the bathroom—using his toothbrush to brush her teeth! I know this could have been worse as I know how I have used toothbrushes. Never imagined a stranger might want to use my battery toothbrush but I certainly am thinking twice about leaving it out any time I travel.”

Ewww! I don’t even let my wife use my toothbrush. I might have to start carrying my toothbrush with me around the city (another reason to get a jacket from SCOTTeVEST, a sponsor and favorite of mine). Thanks, Patricia!

Related to having your toothbrush in the hotel room – make sure it is covered, especially when you are away from the room. The cleaners spray products on the counters and land on your toothbrush. Probably best to keep it in your shaving kit or make-up bag to prevent it from being ‘cleaned’.

I almost hate to share this, heard it many years ago … some travelers left their hotel room and when they returned everything had been stolen except their toiletries and camera. When the film was developed later there were pictures of the thieves rearends with the travelers toothbrushes stuck up in their poophole.

I heard that too but I don’t think it’s true. I just checked Snopes https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/jamaica-me-sick/

This is a great tip, I know we want to assume people are good, but they’re not always! Another tip is to ALWAYS use flip flops in the shower! There is so much bacteria that you just can’t see, especially needed in hostel shared showers. (hope I can share this here) There are more tips for your first backpacking trip here: https://eatloveexplore.com/top-15-rookie-mistakes-to-avoid-on-your-first-backpacking-trip/
