If you’re the type of traveler who unbuckles and stands up the moment a plane touches down, you might want to rethink that habit, especially if you’re flying in Turkey. That’s because, according to the Washington Post, “Director General Kemal Yüksek has issued a new directive instructing cabin crews for planes landing in Turkey to issue warnings that passengers who do not ‘respect the disembarkation priority of the passengers in front of or around you’ will be reported to the authority and ‘an administrative fine will be imposed in accordance with the applicable legal regulations.’”

Passengers deplaning an aircraft.When I first heard about the news, I thought it was just for those passengers who stood up while the plane is still taxiing to the gate, which I can completely understand. Or for those who are seated in the way back and just charge their way to the front of the plane with no regard for their fellow passengers.

However, it seems this directive also includes those who stand up in the aisle before that row’s turn to exit. I am 100% guilty of the latter since, as soon as we’re parked at the gate and the seatbelt sign goes off, I pop out of my aisle seat (this is one of the many reasons I always choose an aisle) to stretch and get my belongings down from the overhead compartment.

In doing this, when it’s my row’s turn, I am ready to roll. It drives me crazy when passengers just take their sweet time getting their belongings from the overhead bin since most passengers are in a hurry to get off the plane, either to catch another flight, get in the immigration line before another plane arrives, see loved ones, make it to a meeting or spend time somewhere other than inside a metal tube.

I think passengers who allow there to be a large gap between themselves and the person in front of them should be fined. The fine that Turkey is talking about, by the way, is reportedly 2,603 Turkish lira or $67 USD. What do you think? Here’s what people are saying on social:

@passengershaming: We’ve been talking about this crime for 17 years. It’s a miracle! 🙏🏼
@mkralovich: I love watching everyone bolt up and then stand uncomfortably in the same spot for 10min while I remain seated
@csulbmom: I don’t know why they don’t let people with connecting flights to deplane first.
@brookeupinthesky: It’s also just time to stretch your legs so you dont die from thrombosis but sure.
@d.gazder: Any Indian airline would make a fortune.
@mccoyoioi: If you’re not at risk for being late to a connecting flight then you go straight to jail.

    I love this, that is so awesome. And I will admit that people who want to stand right away sort do annoy me to, although not as bad. There do seem to be certain ethnicities who do this all the time, for whatever reason I do not know.
    Johnny why are always in such a hurry? That’s one of reasons you give for not checking a bag as well. Slow down and relax a little.
    I do wish there was a way to allow people with connections get off first.
