I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve been a Costco member for nearly a decade. I originally joined when my first child was born, thinking bulk diapers and wipes would justify the membership. For years, I happily shopped inside the warehouse but completely ignored one of Costco’s best perks: the gas station. In fact, it wasn’t until last year that I filled my car up at Costco for the very first time.

The reason I waited so long was because I always saw the lines. Every time I drove past, there seemed to be a steady stream of cars snaking around the pumps and I assumed I’d be stuck waiting forever. As someone who travels frequently and values efficiency, that was enough to keep me away. What I didn’t realize was that Costco’s gas lines move incredibly fast. Now that I’ve actually tried it, I’ve never waited more than five minutes.

The real shock, though, was the price difference. Here in California, gas prices can be brutal. Regular unleaded routinely hovers well above the national average, making every fill up painful. This morning when I filled up at Costco, I paid $3.65 per gallon, more than a dollar cheaper than nearby stations. That kind of savings adds up fast. Depending on how often you drive, the savings on gas alone can pay for the annual Costco membership in just a month.

There are a few things to know before you go. While most Costco warehouses don’t open until 10 a.m. and an hour earlier for Executive members, the gas stations typically operate on a much longer schedule. The station near me is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays and 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sundays. Hours can vary significantly by location, so it’s worth checking your local station before heading out.

Another helpful tip is that the pumps on the right side often have longer lines than those on the left. Many drivers don’t realize that Costco’s hoses are designed to reach the far side of your car. If you’re comfortable pulling up on the opposite side, you can usually save time. Just be alert, stand to the side while fueling and watch for passing cars. Some locations even have lighted indicators above the pumps showing which ones are available, allowing you to pull around the first car in line.

Beyond gas, Costco offers another underrated perk for travelers: its travel program. Even if you don’t need bulk groceries, Costco Travel regularly offers excellent deals on rental cars, cruises and luxury hotel stays. One standout example is a Costco deal to the Four Seasons Bora Bora that is essentially a dream vacation at a discounted rate.

And if you do decide to join, one last tip, especially if you like Italian food. Buy Rao’s pasta sauce. It is widely considered the best jarred sauce out there, and twice a year it goes on sale at Costco, making it an even better deal.

Between gas savings, travel deals and a few unbeatable staples, that little membership card earns its keep faster than you might expect.
