Yesterday, while I was picking up my kids from school, I overheard one of the mothers tell another that she has so much to do including booking all of her mother’s Southwest Airlines (SWA) flights for the rest of the year. Of course, my ears perked up and I had to enquire why (I’m friends with both of them).
My friend explained that on May 28, SWA is changing their fares and will start charging for bags and her mother always checks two and wants to take advantage of it. I obviously did know about Southwest’s new policies which I wrote about and roasted them in an Instagram video (embedded below).

However, what I didn’t realize is that if you book a Southwest Airlines flight on or before May 27, 2025, you can take advantage of their current baggage policy as well as other perks like non-expiring flight credits.
Once May 28 comes around, Southwest will begin charging for checked baggage on most fares and flight credits will have expiration dates.
Here’s a copy and paste of Southwest Airlines’ policy from their website so you get it directly from the horse’s mouth: “We will not charge standard checked bag fees for your first or second checked bag for any reservations booked and ticketed and/or changed on or before May 27, 2025 regardless of your travel date (weight and size limits apply).”
SWA goes on to state: “For reservations booked and ticketed and/or voluntarily changed (including name updates or changes to a ticket) on or after May 28, 2025 checked baggage fees will apply to Basic, Wanna Get Away Plus® and Anytime fares. Business Select® fares will continue to receive two free checked bags. Rapid Rewards® A-List Preferred Members will receive their first and second checked bags for free. A-List Members and Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers will only receive their first checked bag for free. Hawaii residents1 traveling between the islands will continue to receive two free checked bags. Checked bag benefits will not apply on flights booked with a partner carrier. Weight and size limits apply.”
I also didn’t realize that Southwest is giving two free checked bags to Hawaii residents traveling inter-island so it’s good to know.
So, if you plan on flying Southwest Airlines in the next 251 days (they are currently accepting air reservations through January 26, 2026) and want to take advantage of their generous baggage and flight credit policy, then you better get clicking on the Southwest Airlines website.
