A reminder following the legalization of recreational marijuana in CaliforniaIf you live in California like I do, you surely know by now that recreational marijuana is legally for sale as of January 1. You may also have thought about what that means for drivers, and so today—and because it’s an important message in the larger scheme, as well—I’m sharing police warnings about driving under the influence of marijuana as shared by ABC7.com. Here’s the most important chunk of the story: “As with any DUI, there are legal and monetary consequences. Driving high can cost you up to $10,000 in fines, fees and criminal penalties.”

Driving under the influence of marijuana is a criminal offense in California, which “follows in the footsteps of other states such as Washington and Colorado, where the AAA safety foundation is already doing research.” Know this, and be safe. The story in video is below.

As if there isn’t enough hazards on the road with all the cell phone freaks who just can’t keep their hands off the text bar while trying to drive, now we have the pot heads to contend with!! Better stay off the highways folks!!

A further FYI… I am a probation officer in Illinois and we are continuously getting people who are arrested here at our Amtrak station for transporting and possession of marijuana. Just because it’s legal in California, doesn’t mean you can take it with you to other states!

Just an additional reminder. While marijuana is legal under CA State law, it is not necessarily legal in other States and Countries. An individual should probably check the laws of where they are going to be going to before they travel with this substance to areas outside of CA. Penalties particularly in other Countries can be very substantial.
